New Facebook logoFacebook’s Mark Zuckerberg Joins the $1 Salary Club (Mashable)
Facebook confirmed in a filing that Mark Zuckerberg, the social network’s founder and CEO, is taking a $1 salary this year and foregoing any bonuses. But he’s not exactly taking a vow of poverty. AP Zuckerberg reaped a gain of nearly $2.3 billion last year when he exercised 60 million stock options just before the online social networking leader’s initial public offering. The windfall detailed in regulatory documents filed Friday saddled Zuckerberg, 28, with a massive tax bill, and he raised the money to pay it by selling 30.2 million Facebook shares for $38 apiece in the IPO. USA Today Turns out Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, an executive he lured away from Internet giant Google, did pretty well, too. She gained $821 million from shares that vested in 2012 and received another $25.6 million in stock, on top of a $328,000 salary and $277,000 bonus. AllFacebook In other Facebook news, the social network can no longer push updates or beta updates to its Android users via Android overlay Home, as Google updated the terms and conditions of its Google Play store to close the loophole that was being used by the social network and other developers. TechCrunch reported that the change in policy was not aimed at Facebook, but rather at malicious apps. SocialTimes However, industry watchers noted that Facebook had likely stepped on Google’s toes with the release of Home, which overrides some of the Android operating system with Facebook’s own branded functionality. Whether or not the app itself irked Google, it’s clear that Facebook’s sneaky mode of updating it did. VentureBeat The filing with the SEC also said that Jim Breyer, the Accel Partners venture capitalist who played a big role in Facebook’s launch, has decided to step down from the social network’s board of directors. Breyer notified the company that he will not stand for reelection to the board at the shareholder meeting on June 11.

With White House on Tumblr Promising GIFs, Here’s Some to Kick it Off Right (AllThingsD)
The White House announced that is joining the hip microblogging service Tumblr, noting in its announcement on Twitter that “there will be GIFs.” That means “graphics interchange format,” which means a cool way to show — among other things — cool animations. NBC News For a quarter of a century the GIF format has been used as a convenient way to show graphs, drawings and simple animations. Just recently, it was pronounced 2012′s word of the year by the Oxford American Dictionary, owing to a resurgence in popularity among bloggers, especially on Tumblr.

Who Has the Right to Be Anonymous?

With the recent controversy over a bill to increase cyber security, called CISPA, businesses have the right to hand over your information to the government. This leaves your actions and privacy vulnerable to prying eyes, while businesses are free to share data. Is this fair?

TumblrTumblr Launches Promoted Posts on Mobile (SocialTimes)
Tumblr will begin delivering promoted posts to its mobile users as well as its desktop users, the company said on Monday. “It works very simply: Every now and then you’ll see posts from our partners as you scroll through your mobile Dashboard,” the company said in a blog post. AdAge Users of Tumblr’s iOS and Android apps will see up to four ads per day, and they’ll be differentiated with a dollar-sign icon with beams shooting out of it, just as they are in the two existing placements. A Tumblr spokesperson said these ads will ultimately migrate to desktop computers but offered no timetable. PC Magazine The service is asking advertisers to pay to promote blog posts they’ve created themselves, like Coca-Cola’s Tumblr-based campaign. Companies can then measure their marketing impact via the volume of republished posts and “heart” responses from viewers. Messages can also be shared via Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. VentureBeat The key thing to note here, though, is how Tumblr is presenting the ads: Realizing that the most effective advertisements are those that are hardly distinguishable from the content that surrounds them, Tumblr’s mobile ads look just like Tumblr posts. This means that users can like and share them as if they were regular Tumblr content, which should, in theory, help them spread. CNET Mobile users will see sponsored Tumblr stories that are denoted by the “sponsored” label and a dollar sign icon. An ad for the upcoming Warner Bros. flick “The Great Gatsby”, for instance, features Leonardo DiCaprio in animated GIF form. The text of the content ad reads: “Prepare for the Summer of Gatsby – in theaters May 10,” and encourages viewers to follow the gatsbymovie Tumblr.

Twitter’s Rumored Multi-Million Dollar Deal with Ad-Buying Company Should Worry TV Execs (AllTwitter)
It looks like Twitter is no longer happy playing sidekick in the social TV equation and wants to be the top dog. At least, that’s the way it appears if this multi-million dollar deal becomes a reality. The New York Times Twitter continued its march into the advertising world with the news on Monday that the social media company had signed a deal with one of the largest advertising agencies in the world, the Starcom MediaVest Group, part of Publicis Groupe. The multiyear deal, its value estimated to be in the hundreds of millions of dollars, comes at the beginning of the upfront season, the annual series of meetings where networks introduce their new offerings to advertisers and media buyers. VentureBeat Twitter has been unveiling new advertising products such as demographic targeting tools and keyword targeting options with furious rapidity in the past weeks, as well as Twitter #Music. That seems to indicate the company is focusing on monetization … and, if the Silicon Valley buzz is to be believed, a 2013 IPO.

StorifyStorify Gets Down to ‘Business’ (SocialTimes)
Storify is expanding its VIP package to new businesses like a mullet in reverse. While publishers put their curated stories on the front page for their readers, other businesses can create private stories to take back to the office. VentureBeat At the end of March, Storify took a step toward monetization and announced a VIP plan with features designed for “media organizations, publishers, or anyone seeking to deeply integrate social curation and storytelling into their site.” Features include real-time updates of all embedded stories, custom story display with full CSS styling options, priority technical support, the ability to add in your own content and privacy features for only sharing within a particular organization. The Next Web This plan is the first time the company has created paid premium accounts that has become available for individuals, businesses, and organizations — those who use the service for reporting and publishing. Some might think that this is Storify’s monetization strategy, and they would be partially correct. TechCrunch “Current corporate reporting methods for social media — like pasting screenshots into PowerPoint — are cumbersome and lose links to the original data,” said Burt Herman, co-founder of Storify. “One of the main new Storify Business features is private stories, which are only visible to others who have the secret story link. Brands and PR and advertising agencies need to record customer sentiment and conversations from social networks to report on what they are doing.”

New Twitter Service Hopes to Capture Musical Trends (The New York Times)
Twitter’s music service is no longer just for Ryan Seacrest. A week after teasing the Internet by giving celebrities like Mr. Seacrest a first look to test it or, most likely, to build up a ready set of excited endorsements — WAY TO GO YAY !! :) — Twitter has granted all 200 million users access to its much-anticipated music service, which suggests songs to listen to by scanning the service’s posts for music references. The Wall Street Journal/Digits You plug it into Spotify or Rdio and, based on some mishmash of your Twitter activity and what artists you follow, it’ll build you a profile of what you probably don’t normally listen to. While the app is gorgeous, and effective after some use, most of the app feels like a massive duplication of effort. USA Today Twitter first tested #Music on real-life celebrities such as Wiz Khalifa and Blake Shelton, and having passed that test is letting the rest of us past the velvet rope. The company says that many of the most-followed accounts on Twitter are musicians, with half of all users following at least one musician.

FBI Criticizes Internet Vigilantes in Boston Case (Mashable)
Federal Bureau of Investigation special agent Richard DesLauriers said during a press conference Thursday that the footage the FBI released showing its two suspects in the Boston bombing case is the only legitimate footage available. DesLauriers’s words were effectively aimed at Reddit and 4chan, where some users have been attempting to identify suspects in crowdsourced images and video. CNET The FBI has undertaken what is law enforcement’s highest-profile effort at crowdsourcing to date: asking for help identifying two suspects linked to this week’s Boston Marathon bombing. A traditional manhunt becomes something much different in the age of Twitter, Instagram and facial-recognition technology. ReadWrite Six Boston startup founders have teamed up to create EvidenceUpload.org, a service that allows people to upload their photos from their smartphones to the FBI. In the aftermath of the bombings at the Boston Marathon on Monday, the FBI and Boston Police Department asked everybody that had pictures or video of the scene to send them along for analysis. Reddit Co-Founder Won’t Invest in Facebook Because of Stance on #CISPA

In an interview with CNN, Reddit founder Alexis Ohanian said he would refuse to buy Facebook stock because of how he views their stance on privacy. “I’m not planning on it…I understand the business value to what Facebook is doing. We’ve never seen a company like this before–ever. And it knows things about our private lives that no one else does. And one of the big issues that a lot of us in the tech community have had of late has been their support for bills like CISPA that make it really easy for companies like Facebook to hand over private data about us without any due process. So that’s why I’ll be holding off."

Facebook IPO Pitch: Can it Win Big Investors? (Mashable) Looking ahead toward its much-anticipated IPO later this month, Facebook has produced a 30-minute video pitch to show big-time investors why sinking money into a publicly traded Facebook will be a good idea. It’s an interesting take on the normal business investment pitch video — instead of a heavy emphasis on dry finance numbers, Facebook plays to the heartstrings. Reuters In the presentation, chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg said mobile is a key area of growth for Facebook, and that the company would use sponsored stories to generate more advertising income. Advertisers pay Facebook to highlight certain stories. These sponsored posts recently started running on the News Feeds of Facebook mobile users. Financial Times Pricing for Facebook’s premium “social” advertisements continues to rise, two recent studies have found — a positive indicator that could offset concerns about a dip in advertising growth and help sentiment towards the internet company’s initial public offering. A report to be released today by Marin Software, a digital marketing platform that processes more than $100 million worth of spending on Facebook, found a 26 percent increase over the last year in the cost per click for “premium” ad formats. AllFacebook Facebook’s initial public offering slated for May 18 hasn’t slowed its acquisition frenzy, as the social network gobbled up location-based mobile application Glancee for an undisclosed amount. Glancee, an app for Apple iOS and Android devices, allowed users to sign in with Facebook and discover other users within a specified distance with similar interests.
