XboxOneMicrosoft’s New Xbox One Teams with Spielberg and NFL to Create Interactive Social TV (LostRemote)
Xbox revealed its next-generation console Tuesday, Xbox One, featuring live TV integration and two big announcements to blur the lines between television and social gaming. The big announcements were focused on redefining the act of watching TV from a passive to an active experience — mostly on the first screen. The New York Times To that end, Microsoft announced a plan to develop its own original live-action television series that will be accessible through the Xbox, in partnership with the director Steven Spielberg, based on its Halo video-game franchise. The company is also working with the National Football League to develop an app for Xbox that lets players interact with their fantasy football teams while watching a live sportscast of a game. Reuters The new device interacts with a television, responds to voice and gesture commands, includes group video calling on Skype, 15 exclusive game titles and original programming content. Wired Wired editor Peter Rubin spent multiple days at Microsoft’s Redmond campus learning all about Xbox One in advance of the announcement, and most of what the Microsoft execs wanted to talk about was entertainment as a whole, not just games. So in the grand scheme of things, Microsoft isn’t any more interested in hardcore gamers than it is any other potential consumer. The Huffington Post The ESPN app was also revealed, which will allow users to watch live sports on their TV while browsing things like a players fantasy stats or other scores around the world on the same screen. The Xbox One will be “available around the world later this year,” though they did not give any information on pricing.

How Reddit Stepped Up to Help Oklahoma Tornado Victims (The Daily Dot)
Reddit is coming to the aid of those who have felt the effects of the devastating tornadoes in Oklahoma. Since the deadly storms wreaked havoc on the Oklahoma City suburb of Moore, r/Oklahoma, the state’s subreddit, has been exploding with news. While many submissions include photos and videos of the natural disaster, many others include something more: help. USA Today With more Facebook groups popping up every hour, Emily Garman, 34, of Oklahoma City, created OKCLostPets.com hoping to consolidate the emotional search process for missing animals. “So far there have been 220 posts on the site,” she said. “Two or three are coming in a minute.” WDAM People affected by the massive tornado still do not know where their loved ones are, but many of them are using social media to find out. On Twitter, the hashtag #OKMissing is being used to communicate information about missing people, while #OpOK is being used to tell people about where to find shelter and how to volunteer assistance, as well as other information people want to communicate.

Vine David MasseyVast Oklahoma Tornado Kills at Least 91 (The New York Times)
Emergency crews and volunteers continued to work through the early morning hours Tuesday in a frantic search for survivors of a huge tornado that ripped through parts of Oklahoma City and its suburbs, killing at least 91 people, 20 of them children, and flattening whatever was in its path, including at least two schools. Much of the tornado damage appeared to be in the suburb of Moore, where rescue workers struggled to make their way through debris-clogged streets and around downed power lines to those who are feared trapped under mountains of rubble. USA Today Amy Elliott of the state’s medical examiner’s office said today that officials could see as many as 40 more deaths from Monday’s twister. On May 3, 1999, a record-setting EF-5 tornado obliterated the city of 55,000 with winds measured at 318 mph, the highest ever on the earth’s surface. The storm killed 36 people, injured hundreds and caused about $1 billion in damages. Mashable A Facebook group is helping the victims of the tornado. On its trail of destruction, the tornado has blown debris from houses — including people’s personal belongings and important documents — many miles away. The group asks members to post photos of any items or documents that were blown into their yard, so that they can be returned to the rightful owners. RYOT News One man, David Massey, captured some amazing footage of the damage via Vine after emerging from safety. Here are his videos. The Huffington Post Twitter responded with prayers for the victims and hope for survivors. Here are a few of those prayers so far. Boston.com Kevin Durant, a three-time scoring champion for the NBA’s Oklahoma City Thunder, posted on his Twitter account that he was praying for everyone involved. He added: “Everybody stay safe!”

Yahoo Confirms Plans to Acquire, But Not ‘Screw Up,’ Tumblr (SocialTimes)
Yahoo has officially announced its plans to acquire Tumblr for $1.1 billion. Much like Facebook’s $1 billion acquisition of Instagram in 2012, Yahoo’s latest purchase will bring the company a younger user base with the promise of more revenue. The Wall Street Journal In an interview Monday, Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer said buying Tumblr instantly boosts Yahoo’s user base by 50 percent to 1 billion, and Web traffic by 20 percent, “which is really heartening.” Mayer has said repeatedly that increasing Yahoo’s “impressions,” or the number of Web page views and other interactions on Yahoo’s sites, would be the only way to boost revenue. Business Insider Now that Yahoo has announced its acquisition of Tumblr, Karp could be worth north of $220 million. Even though Karp has found great success without attending college, yet alone finishing traditional high school, he doesn’t recommend kids these days drop out of school. USA Today Tumblr could be the crown jewel in Mayer’s major reclamation project of Yahoo, which is competing with Google and Facebook for billions of dollars in advertising revenue. At a press conference in New York, Yahoo unfurled a revamped version of photo-sharing site Flickr, featuring big, bolder photos and an Android app. The New York Times Yahoo is moving its New York headquarters to the former home of The New York Times, on 43rd Street, east of Eighth Avenue, where it plans to expand. Yahoo is talking to city officials about erecting a large illuminated sign with its name on the cupola at the top of the building, where The Times once had its own sign.

AT&T to Open Mobile Video Chat for All Customers (CNET)
AT&T customers should be able to use any mobile video chat app before too much longer. Preloaded video-chat apps will work over AT&T’s cellular network for all customers, regardless of device or data plan, by the end of 2013, according to a statement from AT&T. The Verge Video chat has been a hot-button issue for AT&T, which long blocked iOS users from making FaceTime calls over its network. Last year, that changed, with customers on non-unlimited plans allowed to access it. TechCrunch From the sounds of it, Google won’t have to first “enable” (ask for permission?) in order for Hangouts to work. Even though it’s a pre-loaded app, it will just begin working regardless of the customer’s current data plan.

TumblrReport: Yahoo Will Announce Acquisition of Tumblr Today (SocialTimes)
Yahoo’s board met Sunday and agreed to acquire Tumblr for $1.1 billion in cash, according to AllThingsD. The company was quickly targeted by incoming CEO Marissa Mayer as a larger acquisition target, according to AllThingsD reports. AllThingsD It’s not clear when the official vote was taken, but sources close to the board said the acquisition was a foregone conclusion and was unanimously approved by the directors of Silicon Valley Internet giant. The deal will likely be announced this morning, said numerous sources. The Wall Street Journal Tumblr’s board also has approved the deal, one of the people said. The transaction would add Yahoo to the list of established Internet companies, including Google and Facebook, that have spent $1 billion or more apiece to buy startup companies in hopes of gaining an edge in growth. The New York Times The deal, the seventh since Mayer defected from Google last summer to take over the company, would be her biggest yet. It is meant to give her company more appeal to young people, and to make up for years of missing out on the revolutions in social networking and mobile devices. Tumblr has over 108 million blogs, with many highly active users. Adweek While it remains to be seen how the two companies will mesh and what lies in store for the Tumblr brand and its management team, the pair do seem to present a good fit. Yahoo needs Tumblr’s cachet among both engineers and advertisers, while Tumblr needs big help taking monetization to the next level.

The service is now available, and users can activate the Twitter app on Google’s MyGlass portal. The Verge CNN’s app will give The New York Times some competition in the news arena with video clips and the latest headlines. Elle is the first magazine trying to bring its content to Glass with an app that can read stories aloud, and you can view photos that accompany each piece. When it comes to Evernote, you’ll be able to send text-based notes from the company’s web client to Glass for reference later on. The Huffington Post The futuristic-looking devices have been a common sight at the Google conference this week, with many of the attendees and staffers wearing Glass. But Google executives gave Glass short shrift during the more than three-hour keynote talks on Wednesday, barely mentioning Glass among the litany of new products and services discussed on stage.

ATD: Yahoo Has Had ‘Serious’ Talks with Tumblr Concerning Potential Acquisition or Investment (The Next Web)
According to Kara Swisher and Peter Kafka of AllThingsD, Yahoo has had discussions with Tumblr concerning a potential investment or acquisition. Yahoo has been on a buying spree lately, but hasn’t made a purchase on the scale of Tumblr; instead, it has purchased small companies with teams rich with talent. AllThingsD It’s not the first time Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer has been interested in the New York-based hipster blogging service. As an executive at Google, she had closely watched in its fast growth, along with that of Foursquare. Adweek The deal is not done, but could reach as high as $1 billion, Adweek has learned. Google+Google’s Big Push to Own Social Starts Now (CNET)
Nearly two years after the launch of Google+, Google’s social strategy looks like less of a joke and more of a calculated maneuver to make its social network the underlying fabric that weaves together relationships spread across desktop and mobile, Android and iOS. GoogleGoogle Reportedly to Launch Music Streaming at I/O Conference Today (SocialTimes)
Google will launch music streaming through YouTube and Google Play, according to reports in The Verge and the Wall Street Journal. The company, which has struggled to keep up with Apple in terms of media offerings, has reportedly signed licensing deals with Universal Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment, the reports said. The Verge Earlier this year, Fortune magazine reported that Google had already struck similar licensing agreements with Warner Music Group, the smallest of the top three record labels. But landing Universal Music and Sony gives Google access to the two largest record companies, home to such acts as Bob Dylan, Alicia Keys, Lil Wayne, Rihanna and Jay-Z. The Wall Street Journal Google already has an existing music service, which it launched in 2011 and is part of its Google Play digital media store for devices powered by its Android operating system.
