Google Refuses to Remove Anti-Muslim YouTube Video (Mashable)
White House officials on Friday asked YouTube to review an anti-Muslim video cited as fueling violent protests worldwide, but according to The New York Times, the Google-owned site doesn’t have any intention of taking it down. Google told the publication that the “Innocence of Muslims” video does not violate terms of service for YouTube regarding hate speech because it is focused on the Muslim religion and not the people who practice it. Forbes The protests, which started in Africa and moved into the Middle East, have now spread into China, Great Britain, Germany and Australia. Google said it was censoring the video in India and Indonesia, and has already blocked it in Egypt and Libya, where U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans were killed inside the U.S. embassy in Benghazi. Reuters Google said it was further restricting the clip to comply with local law rather than as a response to political pressure. “This approach is entirely consistent with principles we first laid out in 2007,” the company said. CNET This is not the first time that a U.S. tech company has found itself at the center of a political storm. Nor is it likely to be the last. But earlier cases centered around the sometimes awkward interaction between the technology industry and nondemocratic regimes. The New York Times The controversy over the video has raised questions about the role of Google in governing free expression by determining which content is acceptable to show online and which is not. The company does not police videos uploaded to the site because of the sheer volume involved; 72 hours of videos are uploaded each minute. continued…

Microsoft Breaks Tradition With Surface Tablets (CNET)
Microsoft — a company that traditionally has relied exclusively on its PC partners to provide hardware powered by its Windows operating system — is trying out a new business model with its Windows 8 release. The company is going to offer two Microsoft-branded tablets of its own, both of which are branded as Microsoft Surface. Mashable Super-thin, the tablet is just 9.3mm thin for the Windows RT version and 13.5mm for the Pro version. Both have two full-size USB ports — something you won’t find on the vast majority of the tablet competition. You’ll also find a micro SD port on the side of the RT version and a microSDXC port on the Pro version for adding data to the device or reading files (like pictures from your digital camera) on the fly. Bloomberg News The tablet has a 10.6-inch display, said CEO Steve Ballmer during Monday’s announcement, and the device’s cover serves as a track pad and a full keyboard. Business Insider Surface for Windows RT will be available to the public when Windows 8 is officially released. Microsoft still hasn’t given an exact date for that, but we do know it will be in the fall, in plenty of time for holiday shopping. The Windows 8 Pro model will be available about 90 days later, Microsoft said. The Guardian Analysts gave the as-yet unpriced devices a cautious welcome. “From a design perspective, it looks great,” said Carolina Milanesi, a research vice president for the consumer devices team at Gartner, an information technology research and advisory company based in Stamford, Conn. She said the device looked like a serious competitor to Apple’s iPad, but success would depend on price and the apps available for the devices. continued…

Facebook Delves Deeper Into Search (Bloomberg Businessweek)
Searching the social network could get a lot better in the near future. About two dozen Facebook engineers, led by a former Google engineer named Lars Rasmussen, are working on an improved search engine, say two people familiar with the project who did not want to be named because the company is in a quiet period ahead of its IPO. AllFacebook Speaking of the IPO, speculation about Facebook’s search initiatives heated up when the social network announced its intentions to go public February 1. That week co-founder and chief executive officer Mark Zuckerberg posted a picture of his desk, in which a MacBook displaying what looked like a Facebook page with a large search box was visible. SocialTimes Google, which owns 67 percent of the search market in the U.S., has a clear advantage in being able to index sites from across the Web, while Facebook appears to be working internally with pages and profiles. Mashable Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has consistently downplayed the level of direct competition between Facebook and Google. “I don’t think that this is going to be the type of situation when one company wins all this stuff,” he told Charlie Rose of PBS last fall. Tom’s Guide So how will this new search engine affect Facebook’s relationship with Microsoft? Zuckerberg still meets every few months with Qi Lu, president of Microsoft’s online services division, sources claim. There may be no ruffling of feathers at all, but rather a huge opportunity for two separate types of search engines to work together in harmony to create a huge Google rival, loaded with data Google probably still covets. continued…
