YouTube Announces the Winners of the 2013 Next Vlogger Competition

YouTube has announced the winners of its Next Vlogger competition: an elite group of video bloggers who inspire others while they sit in front of the camera and talk about everything from their latest hauls from the beauty supply store to the best uses for pineapples.

The YouTube judges were looking to crown the next Philip DeFranco or iJustine, who are just two of the many talented vloggers who have made the format so popular on the video-sharing site.

The judges found talent in the U.S., England, Ireland, and Australia who cover a broad spectrum of geekery, beauty, comedy, and other topics.

And the winners are:

Each of these winners will attend a Google+ workshop series led by industry experts and YouTube staff. They’ll also receive $4,000 worth of production equipment and promotion of their channels on YouTube.

Chart: The Internet’s Favorite Oscar Nominees

It’s that time again: the 85th annual Academy Awards ceremony will air on February 25. While members of the Academy have already cast their votes, moviegoers are turning to social media to talk about which stars deserve an Oscar the most. Can they predict the outcome?

To create this leader board of internet favorites, Taykey measured the volume of conversation around each nominee on 50,000 social forums, noting the amount of positive sentiment the fans expressed. “This is interesting,” the company wrote. “Though Alan Arkin received the lowest number of conversations in his category, those conversations were all positive. The Academy votes passion more than popularity, so the sentiment score on this may be more predictive than the volume score.  But we had to make a choice and in social media world volume seems to win out.”

In the chart below, the nominees are ranked by popularity in the most anticipated categories of the night. Here, the musical “Les Misérables“ wins in more than category. Do you think the voters will agree?

YouTube Announces Winners of the NextUp Competition

YouTube has announced the winners of its second annual YouTube NextUp competition, a program first launched in 2011 to encourage video makers to collaborate with one another on new works.

Contestants were asked to partner up with another creator on YouTube and write in with a description of what they’d like to film together. “And you didn’t disappoint!” YouTube wrote. “We were overwhelmed with the imaginative and ambitious proposals and those selected represent a spectrum of determined creators who are all taking their channels to the next level.”

Prizes for this year’s competition include a $3,000 cash prize, $4,000 worth of production equipment, and two week-long “creator camps” at YouTube Space LA to film the projects. And the winners are:

2013 Sundance Shorts Received 2 Million Views in YouTube’s Screening Room

YouTube hosted an online screening room of a select group of 12 of the 65 short films showing this year at the Sundance Film Festival Short Film Awards. The films on YouTube were seen more than 2 million times.

At last night’s award’s ceremony, Trevor Groth, director of programming for the Short Film program at Sundance, said they selected the 65 shorts from a record of more than 8,000 films submitted for consideration at the festival.

Among last night’s winners, presented by YouTube, was “The Whistler,” from Poland, which was given the coveted Grand Jury Prize. “Irish Folk Furniture” from Ireland was recognized with The Short Film Jury Award in the Animation category and was among the films presented in the YouTube Screening Room channel. A complete list of the award winners from the Short Film program may be found here.

This was the second year in a row that the Short Film program was presented by YouTube. Among the presenters at last night’s awards ceremony were jurors Mike Farah, president of production for Funny or Die, and Don Hertzfeldt, Oscar-nominated American independent filmmaker. Spotted at the ceremony was Morgan Spurlock, who created the film “Super Size Me,” which won a Grand Jury Prize for directing at Sundance in 2004.
