How Non-Profits Can Use Facebook: Grooming Tips from ‘Movember’

Every November, men all over the world let their facial hair down to raise awareness for prostate cancer and men’s health.  Participants, or “Mo Bros,” grow mustaches to get people to sponsor them. With the help of their “Mo Sistas,” the “Mo Bros” spread the word on Facebook through photos and videos of their mustaches, and status updates about their fundraising efforts. Today, Facebook announced that the “Movember” campaign raised $17.6 million on the social platform out of a total $141.5 million for the cause in 2012.

Facebook strategic partner manager Libby Leffler attributed the group’s success to its sophisticated use of Facebook Pages at the global and regional level.

Specifically, the Movember team reminded participants on Facebook to tell their friends what they were doing, to post pictures and videos to prove it, and to send them the link to the donation page. “Visual images are hugely important,” said Leffler. “Movember is all about that.” The average participant posted 12 times on Facebook during the month of November.

With the help of more than 1.1 million participants who each had an average of 258 friends, Facebook drove more than 10 million visits to Movember’s website in 2012, increasing 37 percent over 2011 and accounting for 30 percent of the traffic. Facebook was the second highest referrer of traffic overall.

The Movember organizers also used a Leaderboard app for tracking participants’ progress and measuring them against others in different areas.  It gave the men and their supporters that “boost of confidence as they saw themselves rising up through the rankings,” Leffler said.

In 2012, the average donation amount rose 13 percent to $27 for an overall increase of 26 percent compared to 2011.

Now that Facebook is working on a new layout, pictures will become even more important. ”We’re very focused on getting people to understand that visual imagery is very powerful,” said Leffler. “The [images] don’t have to be super high quality - we know non-profits are resource constrained. All that has to happen is for you to share a great image and a really interesting caption to create compelling content. I think the new layout will help increase engagement with non-profits if they’re willing to experiment and test with using better images.”

Although the Chicago-based company narrowed its operating loss relative to the last quarter of 2011, but its loss attributable to shareholders increased due to stock-based compensation and acquisition-related expenses of $26.6 million.

In a bright spot, Groupon reported record billings of $1.5 billion in the quarter, up by nearly a quarter over the same period in the previous year.

“Record billings growth this quarter is a clear signal that customers love Groupons. We will continue to invest in growth through 2013 as we see new opportunities to give our customers what they want,” said CEO Andrew Mason.

LinkedIn Sends Congratulatory Emails to Owners of Most-Viewed Profiles

Shortly after revealing its year-end results for 2012, LinkedIn is celebrating 200 million members by sending out emails to thank (and rank) the users whose profiles had the most views.

In yesterday’s fourth quarter earnings call, LinkedIn executives reported record profits for the professional networking site and a growing user base of 200 million members.

LinkedIn’s Ada Chen Rekhi announced in a separate blog post that day that the emails would soon be coming to “many who have been instrumental in helping us reach this milestone to recognize their part in our journey.”

The emails have arrived with a subject line that reads, “Congratulations! You have one of the top _% most viewed LinkedIn profiles for 2012.”

Inside, there’s a link to a letter from LinkedIn executive Deep Nishar that also includes an infographic with statistics on LinkedIn’s user base in 2012. The most-viewed profile in the past year was that of President Barack Obama, which received 526,270 views.

LinkedIn is encouraging email recipients to share the news on Twitter with a pre-written tweet. So far, we’ve seen tweets from the top 1 percent, the top 5 percent, and the top 10 percent on the microblogging site. We’ve reached out to LinkedIn for more information.

LinkedIn to Launch Sponsored Posts

linkedin, social networks, social media, sponsored posts, sponsored content, facebookLinkedIn is testing sponsored posts from a select set of corporate partners and expects to roll them out for all users in 2013, executives said in a call with analysts following the release of the company’s 2012 financials.

LinkedIn is allowing marketers, including GE, Xerox and BlackBerry, to re-issue research and other sponsored content in status updates that are served to a select group of their followers. The advertising model, similar to Facebook’s Sponsored Posts, is currently being tested only for desktop users.

LinkedIn, unlike other prominent tech companies including Facebook, Zynga and Groupon, has shown solid financial results since its IPO 18 months ago. Its revenue in the fourth quarter of 2012 was up 81 percent from the last quarter of 2011.

The results “have substantially exceeded our own expectations,” said Steve Sordello, the company’s CFO. Sordello and CEO Jeff Weiner attributed to changes to the website over 2012, which make it more useful for sharing content.

The company’s staff grew nearly 40 percent in 2012 to 3,500 employees, and executives said they expect to add another 1,300 staffers in 2013, primarily in sales research and development.

Yelp, Still in the Red, Reports Solid Sales Numbers From 2012

social media, social networks, recommendations, local search, yelpYelp reported a loss of $19 million in 2012, but its sales revenue grew 65 percent.

Yelp’s sales revenue grew 65 percent in 2012. It reported $41 million in revenue in the fourth quarter, which reflected the same 65 percent growth when compared to the fourth quarter of 2011.

Yelp lost $5.3 million in the quarter, reflecting heavier spending on sales and marketing. But its fourth quarter loss in 2011 was significantly larger.

The company managed to boost its local business accounts to 40,000, a 70 percent increase in a year-over-year comparison.

User metrics also showed solid growth, as total reviews grew 45 percent year-over-year. The local business search featured 36 million reviews at the close of 2012. Monthly unique visitors were up nearly a third to 86 million at the end of 2012. After its earnings call, the company announced that in January, it saw 100 million unique visitors, a new record.

“2012 was a tremendous year for Yelp. We completed a successful IPO, launched new products to improve the Yelp experience for consumers and business owners, expanded into new markets while increasing our presence in existing ones, and completed our first acquisition,” CEO Jeremy Stoppelman said in a statement.

In 2013, the company will focus on boosting its user base in Europe and creating more value for business owners. It will also focus on improving its user experience for mobile users.

In the fourth quarter, the Yelp app was used on roughly 9 million mobile devices on a monthly average basis.

Stoppelman said he expects revenue to grow by half in 2013. He did not say whether the company would turn a profit.

Zynga Lost $28.6 Million in Q4, But Beat Market Expectations

Zynga, social gaming, social media, social networks, facebook, twitter, pinterestZynga reported a quarterly loss of $28.6 in the fourth quarter of 2012, compared to a loss of $435 in the last quarter of 2011. Its annual loss was $209 million, down from $404 million in 2012.

The company’s revenue fell slightly, driven by a 15 percent drop in “bookings,” or in-app purchases.

Zynga had 298 million monthly active users (or MAUs) in the quarter, up 24 percent in a year-over-year comparison, but down slightly from active users in the third quarter of 2012.

Still, even these weak numbers edged out analyst expectations for the waning gaming company, and stocks rose after hours.

YouTube Advertisers Spent 50 Percent More In 2012

Yesterday during Google’s fourth-quarter earnings call, Nikesh Arora, Google’s Senior Vice President and Chief Business Officer, revealed that 2012 was a massively successful year for YouTube on multiple fronts.  Not only did viewers begin watching 4 billion hours of video a month, but Arora reported that “our top 25 advertisers are now spending average of over $150 million per year.”

Arora said, “YouTube is not only home for creators, but it’s also home for major brand advertisers.  On YouTube, our top 100 global advertisers spent over 50% more in 2012 than they did in 2011.  Clearly this is a strong signal of the power in YouTube to reach advertisers.”

Interestingly enough, Arora points out that one of the biggest factors in this growth has been the TrueView skippable ad format, through which advertisers only pay if viewers watch the ad.  Arora reported that 70% of in-stream ads on YouTube are now TrueView, with the skippable ad format recently expanding to Xbox, iPad and Wii in the last quarter.

Another factor, which was not mentioned in the earnings call but is another likely explanation for this massive growth in ad spend, is YouTube’s push of their premium content channels in 2012.  The company invested in a slew of professionally-created content channels last year, from celebrities to television and film studios and successful YouTube partners.  With premium content comes premium costs for advertising.

Of course, the fact that YouTubers are watching more video than ever – at over 4 billion hours a month – and that YouTube is “now available across over 400 million mobile devices, gaming consoles and connector PDs in addition to your desktop” also didn’t hurt.

And finally, because we can’t talk about YouTube in 2012 without giving a shoutout to Psy, Arora reported that Gangnam Style “generated over $8 million in all-in advertising deal.”  It is not clear exactly what percentage of this $8 million went to YouTube and which percentage went to Psy, but Chase Hoffberger of The Daily Dot reports that “it’s estimated that Psy will walk away with half of that $8 million,” though it may be less as an infographic in early December estimated that the Korean pop star had made somewhere in the vicinity of $900,000 from YouTube ad revenue.
