Evernote Expands Social Functionality With Two App Updates

mobile apps, linkedin, business cards, evernote hello, facebook, social appsEvernote iOS apps now allow users to scan business cards and make dinner reservations.

Yesterday, Evernote launched an update for its Hello app that allows users to take a photograph of a business card, much like LinkedIn Card Munch does. The app gathers data from profiles on LinkedIn or Facebook that connect to the same email address. It stops short of connecting the user to the business cardholder on LinkedIn, however.

The card-scanning functionality had been available only to premium subscribers.

Today the company released an update for its Food app that integrates OpenTable booking.

Evernote’s Food app aims to be a one-stop shop for all things culinary, uniting restaurant wish-lists, recipes and even food blogging.

The app draws restaurant ratings, photos and menu information from Foursquare’s API.

Google Powers Up Google+ Social Sign-in

google+, google plus, social networks, social media, social sign-on, social log-inGoogle will now allow users to sign in to third-party apps using their Google+ log-in, the company said today.

Once logged in this way, users will be prompted to specify with which Google+ circles they want to share content. The log-in blocks the so-called “frictionless sharing” that Facebook introduced in early open-graph releases, inviting harsh criticism from users and privacy advocates.

“Google+ doesn’t let apps spray ‘frictionless’ updates all over the stream, so app activity will only appear when it’s relevant (like when you’re actually looking for it),” wrote Seth Sternberg, director of product management for Google+.

Content shared from apps to Google+ using the social sign-on will feature custom actions, akin to Facebook’s open graph. For instance, if Devon shares a story from NPR to Google+, her friends will be able to click “listen” from within their Google+ streams. Other actions include “donate” and “add to cart.”

In a boon for developers, Google is also offering users the opportunity to download apps to their Android devices from the desktop Web. can download apps to mobile devices from web.

“One of the hardest things for any mobile company is app discovery and this is a developer’s dream,” said Damien Patton, the founder and CEO of the social app Banjo, which is one of the 10 apps tapped to pilot Google’s social sign-on.

Google may hope that easing discovery and download among Android users will help it compete for apps with iOS, which earns developers significantly more revenue.

And, any users who use the sign-in will likely count as active users of Google+, although a user need only have Google credentials, not specifically Google+, to use the feature. (We’ve reached out to Google to confirm and will update if we hear back.)

Also debuting the sign-on are Flixster, OpenTable and Shazam, a couple of newspapers and several retailers.

OpenTable Co-founder Launches CRM App for Small Businesses

mobile apps, CRMOpenTable co-founder Glenn Allen has teamed up with former Zynga mobile designer Alan Wells to launch Glyder, a CRM tool for iPhone that allows small business owners to communicate with customers on multiple platforms.

Glyder is backed by 500 Startups. It integrates with Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, email, text, MailChimp and iOS Passbook and supplies design templates for content.

“Very small businesses still struggle with the complexity of online marketing – they have to reach their customers on multiple platforms and are underserved by existing web-based tools. They don’t have the time required to figure out all the platforms or the money to hire an employee or consultant,” Allen said in a statement.

Businesses with five or fewer employees represent the app’s target market. Owners of such businesses are spread too thin to set aside time to do marketing and must do it on the go, Glyder has concluded.

The app emerged from a private beta today, and is available in the App Store. Glyder operates on a “fremium” model: The app is free but features premium templates and additional distribution options for $0.99 each.
