Salesforce’s New Social.com Dashboard Unites Social Listening and Real-Time Advertising

Salesforce today launched Social.com, a marketing dashboard that unites the social monitoring of Radian6, acquired by Salesforce two years ago, and a beefed-up version of the social advertising tool the company acquired with Buddy Media last June.

“We believe more than ever that social marketing is the future of the ads business and how companies are connecting to their customers,” said Eric Stahl, the vice president of web content and strategy.

Social marketing is expected to be an $11 billion business by 2017, according to a recent study from BIA/Kelsey.

Social.com is the first tool to offer both social monitoring and ad placement, an integration that Salesforce says will make it far more feasible for companies to advertise based on real-time social media trends and conversations.

The Social.com dashboard allows corporate users to access their customer data and their social listening research from the same place and to import social interactions into their customer relations management, or CRM, databases. The dashboard allows marketers to create and place ads, monitor their performance and boost investments in the better performing content.

Marketers can place ads on Facebook or Twitter using the software.

Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff highlighted the opportunities Buddy Media’s social advertising tool presented at the time of the acquisition.

Prior to today’s launch, the social advertising tool accounted for 2.5 billion ad impressions per day.

Facebook Shares Nab Biggest Gain Since IPO on Earnings, Analyst Upgrades (The Wall Street Journal)
Facebook on Wednesday posted its biggest daily stock gain since its initial public offering in May, a day after reporting strong revenue and progress on making money from mobile ads. The social network’s shares rose 19 percent to $23.23 on the Nasdaq Stock Market, its highest closing price in five weeks. Inside Facebook Facebook spent $87 million so far this year on business acquisitions not including its Instagram purchase, the company revealed in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Wednesday. The social network spent $521 million on Instagram — $300 million of which was in cash, the rest in vested shares of Class B common stock. The New York Times/Bits Blog Facebook still trails Google in online advertising, both on desktop and mobile. Analysts say that like Google, Facebook will most likely have to roll out an ad network that allows marketers to reach Facebook users wherever they are — whether they are browsing the Web or downloading a mobile application. Mashable We’re closer to seeing a widespread updated version of Facebook Messages. On Wednesday, Facebook user Interactive Swim posted a picture of the welcome note for the updated Messages which recently hit its page, indicating that the feature may be starting to roll out to additional users. Reuters U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said on Wednesday a Facebook post in which an Islamic militant group claimed credit for a recent attack on the U.S. mission in Benghazi, Libya, did not constitute hard evidence of who was responsible. continued…

Showing Losses, Salesforce Pink-Slips 100 Employees

salesforce, cloud, enterprise, radian6, buddy mediaAfter filing financial statements for Buddy Media that showed a $20.5 million loss last quarter, Salesforce today laid off about 100 employees at its other acquired social analytics arm, Radian6.

“With the integration of Radian6 and Buddy Media, the Salesforce Marketing Cloud is re-balancing its resources to support its growth, including moving from a hub to a distributed model for certain customer-facing roles, consolidating marketing and dramatically increasing investments in R&D. Fewer than 100 people were impacted globally,” a spokesperson said.

At the end of the third quarter, Salesforce had a workforce of 8,750 full-time equivalent employees.

Salesforce agreed to acquire Buddy Media in June. It acquired Radian6 in mid-2011.

The company justified the acquisition of Buddy Media by saying that combining it with Radian6 under the same umbrella would generate economies of scale.

“By bringing together market leaders Radian6 and Buddy Media, we are doubling down on the Salesforce Marketing Cloud to provide CMOs with the ability to manage the entire social marketing lifecycle,” Marcel LeBrun, senior vice president of Salesforce Radian6, said in the press release.

However, the financial statements for Buddy Media showed losses dating back to 2010. Salesforce itself showed an unaudited net loss of $9 million last quarter, more than double its red ink in the third quarter of 2011.

Twitter Policy’s Latest Victim: If This, Then That (Mashable)
The online service IFTTT is the latest company to suffer because of Twitter‘s new API policy. The service sent a note to users on Thursday afternoon saying it would be removing some abilities with how it interacts with Twitter due to the new rules. AllThingsD The way the email was worded made it seem like IFTTT was the latest in a string of companies affected by Twitter’s recent overhaul of its developer guidelines (currently a hotbed of contention in the tech community that relies upon Twitter’s platform to power their services). “In recent weeks, Twitter has announced policy changes that will affect how applications and users like yourself can interact with Twitter’s data. As a result of these changes, on Sept. 27 we will be removing all Twitter triggers, disabling your ability to push tweets to places like email, Evernote and Facebook.” BuzzFeed Animated GIFs don’t display in most Twitter apps, including the official clients for iPhone, Android and Mac OS. They do display in Tweetdeck and on Twitter’s website, but they’ve been officially unsupported for years, according to Twitter’s support pages. Yahoo Chelsea confirmed that Jon Obi Mikel has closed his account on social networking website Twitter after receiving racial abuse following the 2-2 draw with Juventus on Wednesday evening. That error led to several racist tweets being directed at the Nigeria international, something which the west London club has now condemned. The Next Web Twitter is making what many of us feel to be mistakes with its beloved service. A service with a legacy of robust developer support and user-created community. But Twitter is not evil. continued…

Google+ Begins Rolling Out Vanity URLs (Mashable)
Google+ is introducing vanity URLs, allowing users to further customize their profile pages, the company announced Monday. The vanity URLs are short, easy-to-remember Web addresses that link directly to a member’s profile or page on Google+, according to a blog post by employee Saurabh Sharma. TechCrunch Google has already enabled this feature for a number of big brands and celebrities like Toyota, Delta Airlines and Britney Spears, but don’t get too excited yet. It’s not clear when Google plans to roll out custom URLs to all of its users. CNET This is likely welcome news for most Google+ users since memorizing long strings of numbers isn’t exactly easy. For example, CNET’s Google+ URL is https://plus.google.com/105198124856956810263/posts. But wouldn’t https://plus.google.com/+CNET be much more manageable? VentureBeat It’s worth noting that the move comes over three years after Facebook announced custom usernames for its users. So Google is a bit behind the curve. Wired Google product manager Matthew Leske has announced that Google+ will “make concerts more awesome” by adding high-quality audio, or “Studio Mode,” to its video broadcasting system “Google+ Hangouts On Air.” Studio Mode allows concert organizers to flip a switch and have audio optimized for music. continued…
