10 Awesome Videos You Probably Didn’t See In 2012

Happy (almost) New Year, lovely Social Times readers!  ‘Tis the season for 2012 roundups, and you’ve likely already seen a whole slew of lists of the top videos of 2012 based on which got the most views and shares.  But there were lots of great videos in 2012 that didn’t make “the top lists” and we decided to compile some of the best of these videos that didn’t quite go viral.

All of the videos in our list have yet to hit the 1 million view mark (at least as of today) but they are so worth watching.  Enjoy!

POP! Goes the weasel.

The tension as this baby casually sits by, oblivious to what will happen when the jack-in-the-box pops open, is almost unbearable!  But when the the weasel finally goes pop, the reaction isn’t quite what you’d expect.

38 Seconds With Gustavo Almadovar

This 2008 video lay dormant on YouTube until this fall, when it started to take off thanks to shares on Reddit, Comedy Central, Jezebel and other sites.  It currently has almost 1 million views.  Gustavo Almadovar!  Gustavo Almadovar! Gustavo Almadovar!

Sarah Donner and the sleepy kitten

This sleepy kitten loves the ukulele.  And we love this sleepy kitten.

Morgan Freeman recording some Duke Nukem Material

This video, which has racked up just over 323,000 views since August, features a Morgan Freeman impersonator recording a voiceover for the video game Duke Nukem.  Personally, this may be my favorite video of the year and it has been the source of many-a-laugh for me over the past few months.  Warning: The language in this video is definitely less than safe for work.

Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade

Best dog Halloween costume ever? I’d say so!

Reading Rainbow Remixed

This year, PBS Digital Studios partnered with John D. Boswell, aka melodysheep, to remix PBS personalities from Bob Ross to Mister RogersJulia Child and others.  Most of these remixed videos have racked up millions of views.  The latest, a remix of LeVar Burton from Reading Rainbow, currently stands at 560,000 views, but it is worthy of many, many more!

How to inflate a dog like a balloon

I’m not really sure what to say about this video.  Just that I wish my dog could do something as silly as this!

If You Ever Need Someone – The Family Bones

I am a huge stop motion fan and this awesome post it stop motion music video from The Family Bones really stood out for me this year.  Beautiful!

Mario – Post It Life

And while we’re on the subject of post it stop motion…here’s another amazing work of post it awesomeness that racked up 893,000 views this year.

Baby I Lobe You – An Autocorrected Love Song

Almost as much as I love stop motion, I love to hate autocorrect snafus.  This awesome love song is all about hilarious inaccurately autocorrected text messages.  It’s got just over 369,000 views to date.

10 Most Viral Branded Video Ads Of 2012

The end of the year is almost here and you know what that means—it’s time to prepare yourself for being bombarded with 2012 roundups and lists!  Here we bring you our first end of the year viral video roundup—the top 10 branded viral videos of 2012.

Unruly has ranked global branded viral videos in their 2012 Unruly Global Viral Video Ads Chart, which is based on the number of times each video was shared, rather than the number of views.

While big, well-known brands like P&G, DC Shoes, TNT, Chevrolet and Volkswagen made the Top 10, a surprise brand came in at number 1—Invisible Children, the non-profit behind this year’s viral sensation KONY 2012.  KONY 2012 has been shared over 10.1 million times since it hit YouTube on March 5.  Unruly reports that, “The incredible success of this 30-minute video demonstrates how a relatively unknown entity can make a global impact in social media with powerful content and a comprehensive distribution strategy.”  It’s true that a year ago most people had never even heard of Invisible Children.  It’s pretty amazing that they succeeded in passing all of the world’s biggest brands to land the number one spot on Unruly’s chart.

Unruly reports that the number of video shares of branded content saw a 21 percent increase this year, with the top 500 ads attracting a total of 113 million shares.  Additionally, shares of the top 10 ads rose a whopping 67 percent, from 16.8 million in 2011 to 28 million this year.

Sarah Wood, co-founder and COO of Unruly, says, “Emotive content and bottom-up sharing stole the show this year.  The world’s biggest brands can learn from Invisible Children: it’s not about a 30-second commercial anymore when a 30-minute video gets 10 million global shares.”

Check out the top ten most-shared branded video ads of 2012 below and click here for the full top twenty list.  How many of these ads to you remember seeing?
