Bye Bye, Bieber! Rihanna Is Now the Most-Viewed Artist on YouTube

Grab your umbrella-ella-ellas, everyone: Rihanna, who keeps raining down hits like “Umbrella” and ”Diamonds,” is now the number one artist on YouTube, ahead of teen heartthrob Justin Bieber.

According to Starcount, the singer’s official channel, RihannaVEVO, has reached more than 3.47 billion views, exceeding the number of views on Justin Bieber’s channel by a landslide.

Bieber had been on top for quite some time. In October 2011, he beat Lady Gaga to 2 billion views on his channel. One year later, he became the first artist to reach 3 billion views.

Rihanna subsequently racked up 150 million views, knocking Bieber down to second place ahead of Eminem and Lady Gaga.

“Rihanna’s recent video ‘Stay’ may be accountable for her popularity surge, as it has amassed almost 40 million views in the last two weeks,” noted Starcount, but “with a new video soon to be released with fellow Canadian and Rihanna’s ex-boyfriend Drake, it might not be long before Bieber claims back his YouTube throne.”

Most Influential People, Companies and Cities of 2012 [Infographic]

Klout, a service that ranks social network account holders for their influence, released a list of the most influential people, companies, products and cities of 2012.

The results jibe with the most search-for terms of the year. The iPhone was the big winner in products. And Facebook, the single most searched term of the year, was the most influential company. Barack Obama, TIME’s man of the year, was the most influential person — but was closely followed by Justin Bieber. Perhaps thanks to Mr. Obama, Chicago was the most influential city on the Internet.

Check the full list for some surprises.

Gangnam Style On Par To Hit 1 Billion Views By Mid-December

Over the weekend, Psy’s Gangnam Style galloped past Justin Bieber’s Baby to become the number one most-viewed YouTube video of all time—an amazing feat accomplished in just four months.  But hold on to your invisible horses, because if Psy’s video continues to rack up views at the same rate as it has been, the Korean pop star is on his way to make YouTube history again in mid-December, when his video will be the first to reach a whopping 1 billion views!

Kevin Allocca of YouTube Trends reports that “as of noon on Saturday, the viewcounts stood at 805 million to 803 million.”  Today, as of 9 a.m. ET, Psy’s ‘Gangnam Style’ clocks in at 825.5 million, while Justin Bieber’s Baby has 805.3 million.  The chart below puts things in perspective, illustrating that sharp viral spike that took Psy to 800 million views in a third of a year—something that Bieber has been working on for nearly three years, since the video hit YouTube in February of 2010.  Pretty impressive, eh?

If you consider the fact that Gangnam Style has racked up an additional 20 million views since Saturday at noon, that puts the video at about 10 million views per day.  At that rate, it will take about 17 and a half days for Psy to hit the 1 billion mark, somewhere around December 13.  It may happen even sooner, as fans rush to help the video make history.

Give Psy’s video a watch below to help the video make it to 1,000,000,000 (wow, that’s a lotta zeros!) and if you’re not sick of Gangnam style yet (and you shouldn’t be!) then check out our not one, not two, but three lists of Gangnam Style covers and parodies.  Oppa!

A Bulgarian digital rights activist is the proud owner of your Facebook name, username and email address. Bogomil Shopov bought this information for 1.1 million Facebook users for $5. The Huffington Post According to a cached version of the for-sale page on Gigbucks, the information was harvested mostly from English-speaking Facebook users in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Europe. A long list of satisfied customers near the bottom of the page bears witness to the information’s accuracy. ReadWrite Shopov said he had been contacted by Facebook’s Platform Policy Team after revealing on his blog that he had acquired the list. He said officials with the social network were upset because they feared his public revelation would upend an internal investigation. NBCNews.com After getting wind of the transaction, Facebook said it would investigate how the data entries were obtained. “We have dedicated security engineers and teams that look into and take aggressive action on reports like those raised here,” a Facebook statement read. The Wall Street Journal A man who claimed he owned a major stake in Facebook was arrested on Friday and charged in what federal prosecutors described was a multibillion dollar scheme to defraud the social network site and its founder Mark Zuckerberg. Paul Ceglia allegedly “doctored, fabricated and destroyed evidence” to support his false claim that he was promised a 50 percent share in Facebook by Zuckerberg, according to a criminal complaint unsealed in Manhattan, New York City, federal court on Friday. Twitter Founders Want to Reinvent Digital Publishing – Again (Mashable)
Twitter founders Ev Williams and Biz Stone want to shake up the digital publishing world with their latest venture, Medium. The pair, who also worked together on Blogger, announced the new platform Tuesday. GigaOM The new collaborative publishing tool lets people contribute as much or as little as they want to themed “collections” of content. The idea, the founders said in a blog post, is that people should be able to publish without “the burden of becoming a blogger” and worrying about developing an audience. The Next Web The platform has a grid-based layout and appears to fall somewhere between Twitter and Blogger as an option for content creators. The interface for photographs is especially gorgeous, taking up the full window with the image and relegating chrome to the corners of the screen. TechCrunch Anyone can read and give feedback on Medium entries now, with publishing access to roll out from friends and family to more people soon. To start, there are four collections. VentureBeat
The big question is, does the Internet have room for one more publishing platform? And if it does, is Medium the lucky one out of a sea of competing products? continued…
