Talk While You Tumbl: Babblr Previews Chat Application for Tumblr

If you’ve ever wanted to instant message other bloggers on Tumblr, a new app may be coming your way. Recently launched in private beta, Babblr allows Tumblr members to chat with with their friends and followers and to create groups.

There’s a waiting list to test it out, but according to TechCrunch, the third-party application is built on the Tumblr API. It integrates with your Tumblr dashboard through a Chrome extension, pulls up your list of contacts, and lets you choose which ones you’d like to chat with. You can also put them into groups, like “co-workers” or “friends.”

While Tumblr has said in the past that its members are more likely to consume and reblog content than to write posts, a recent survey showed that its younger members are using the social network instead of Facebook, which has both instant messaging and groups. Currently, Tumblr members can only reply to blog posts.

Babblr is set to launch in a couple of weeks. Co-founders Brandon Sowers, Brett Williams, and Trevor Clarke are co-workers at social good e-commerce company Sevenly, which is based in Southern California.

Glide Raises At Least $1 Million For Instant Video Messaging App [Update]

Backed by seven figures in funding, today Glide announced a new instant video messaging app that allows you to enjoy video messaging in real time, or on your own schedule.

A press release explains, “Live video chat is expressive and personal, yet can be a hassle to schedule, especially with groups of friends and family across different time zones.  Texting is simple and convenient, yet lacks the personality of video.”  Glide solves this problem with an instant video messaging solution that broadcasts messages live the moment the user being recording, while simultaneously saving broadcast messages to the cloud so recipients can enjoy them later.

The free app, which launched today on iPhone and is coming soon to Android, touts the following features:

  • Real time broadcasting with no need to wait for videos to upload or download
  • Group chat sans the need to schedule in advance
  • Autoplay lets you easily catch up on all your conversations
  • Low bandwidth – Data usage is half that of conventional video calls
  • Videos are stored in the cloud so they don’t take up space on your device
  • Text & Emoji support lets you react to friends’ broadcasts in real time

Philippe Schwartz, founder and former CEO of ooVoo, who also happens to be Glide’s Executive Director and a shareholder, says, “Glide seamlessly combines the best of video and messaging with a groundbreaking product that will disrupt the world of communications.  Initial feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, and we will continue to improve the product based on the needs of our users.”

The application rose to No. 1 in Social Networking apps and No. 3 in Top Free Apps in Israel, following a soft launch on March 7.  But what’s really impressive is the whopping seven figures that the company was able to raise leading up to the launch.  In addition to Schwartz, shareholders include Orey Gilliam, former CEO of ICQ and AOL IM.

A spokesperson for the company told me, “The funding will support Glide’s growing team and will aide in further development of the iOS app and creation of the Android version.  Glide’s sole focus right now is creating the best communication experience possible for their rapidly expanding user base. The funding will also support infrastructure, server side costs, and further development of Glide’s core, patent-pending video technologies.”

Update: Our previous title incorrectly reported that Glide raised over “1 billion” instead of “1 million.” Blame Megan and her terrible math skills.

Hootsuite Adds Real-Time Chat to Dashboard

Social media management system Hootsuite has released Conversations, a real-time instant message tool that lets you collaborate with colleagues without leaving your dashboard.

Founded in 2008, Hootsuite connects to your pages on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Google+ so that you can monitor conversations and schedule posts. You can also use it to post content on YouTube,Tumblr, MailChimp, Flickr, and other services. The company serves 5 million customers and competes with other services like Salesforce and TweetDeck.

Multiple people can work from the same dashboard using the Teams feature, but until now, there hasn’t been a way for them to communicate with each other without going somewhere else. Conversations is designed for support teams, marketing departments, and any other group in the company to work together on their social media accounts.

“I see interesting opportunities for both innovation and engagement arising out of tools like HootSuite Conversations. Tools alone are never enough, but together with a strategy and culture shift towards real-time knowledge sharing and transfer – HootSuite now empowers people to better identify subject matter experts, think out loud, develop shared listening, and build collective intelligence and memory. This can be very powerful in inspiring employees and strengthening trust as well as identifying new opportunities and ideas. It’s not just about identifying ideas but being able to act on those ideas and integrate employee feedback,” said Jacob Morgan, Principal of Chess Media Group and best-selling book author of The Collaborative Organization in a statement.

The tool is available in beta for freebie accounts as well as Hootsuite’s upgraded plans. You can import your contacts from Google and Yahoo! for an easier transition.
