Internal medicine and infectious disease specialist Isaac Bogoch and his colleagues turned an iPhone 4S into a fairly accurate microscope by attaching an eight dollar, three-millimeter ball lens to the smartphone's camera lens using double sided tape.

The DIY microscope was tested with 200 slides of stool samples from school children with different types of parasitic worms in Pemba Island, Tanzania. The slides were covered with cellophane strips and then placed up against the lens. A simple flashlight illuminated the slides from below. The doctors took photos of the samples and assessed them on the iPhone screen. Read more...

Apple To Samsung: The S4 Infringes on Our Patents

Google-warrants-law

A new salvo has been fired in the ongoing Apple-Samsung war

In a US District of California filing yesterday, Apple added the new Galaxy S4 smartphone to a list of 22 Samsung products the company claims infringe on its iOS patents, giving Apple more ammunition for next year's patent trial.

If imitation is the highest form of flattery, then these two should be happily married. But that couldn't be farther from the truth. Both are pointing the finger and this seems to be a showdown based in part on Samsung elbowing in on Apple's iPhone market and the coming change to Samsung's own operating systems. Read more...

An Australian computer-security expert has created an application that lets anyone see the locations of the last three Wi-Fi access points used by an Apple iPhone or iPad — information that could be used to deduce where the iOS device user lives.

Melbourne-based researcher Hubert Seiwert's iSniff GPS, now freely available for anyone to download and use, combines three different Apple iOS features.

None of the features pose any threat to privacy on their own, but when combined could tell strangers a lot about you.

"This could be used to locate ... where people live," Seiwert told SC Magazine. Read more...

Sniff Your Phone: This Device Puffs Out a Scent

Chatperf

The sense of smell is a tough one to work into media — attempts at getting it into movies date back to the 1930s, and Disneyland and Walt Disney World include scents in some of their attractions. Technology companies have tried adding it to video games and television, so it was only a matter of time before someone tried to add it to a smartphone.

ChatPerf, a Japanese company, is rolling out a smartphone add-on about the size of a USB stick that attaches via the 30-pin connector on an iPhone (a company spokesperson told Diginfo TV that an Android version would be available this fall). The add-on is tiny “tank” that contains a given smell. After it’s attached to the phone, a screen comes up with a “puff” button that the user taps to release a scent. Read more...
