At Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), the annual gaming conference that took place in Los Angeles earlier this week, the unveiling of Sony's new PlayStation 4 dominated the gaming news cycle.

In addition to fanfare surrounding the much-hyped console, however, there were also several mobile-game announcements and launches this week: A popular Facebook game arrived on mobile, while a well-known social-gaming company launched an action-packed MOBA (multiplayer online battle arena). What's more, some of our beloved movie and television characters made appearances in a few Android and iOS games. Read more...

iOS 7 and Facebook Hashtags Debut and Other Top Comments

This week's major news can be summed up with a clean "#iOS7."

Facebook (finally) rolled out hashtag support, and Apple debuted the next "biggest thing to happen to the iPhone since the iPhone" since the last "biggest thing to happen to the iPhone since the iPhone": the bright new iOS 7. And of course our readers had much to say about it.

Announced at WWDC, iOS 7 drew a lot of criticism for its lighter color scheme, even inspiring a Tumblr account, "Jony Ive Redesigns Things," which mostly paints Apple's vice president of industrial design to be a Lisa Frank for 2013

Some commenters said iOS 7's shiny design — which moves away from much of the skeuomorphic look that Steve Jobs prided himself on for setting Apple apart from other mobile operating systems — is an insult to Jobs' vision and suggested that since Jobs' passing, Apple's been losing its lead in innovation against Microsoft, Android and other companies. (New features and designs in iOS 7 noticeably similar to existing apps and mobile systems.) Read more...

Microsoft Office has finally made its way to iOS.

Free to download, the app only works for those who has subscribed to Microsoft Office 365 (at a cost of about $10 a month of $100 a year), and for now there’s only an iPhone version — iPad users still only get Office web apps via the browser.

Using Office for iPhone you can edit Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents right on your phone’s screen, andyou can also create new Word and Excel documents on the fly. Everything you create or edit is synced via Office 365’s cloud capabilities to other devices, regardless of platform. Read more...

If you've ever wanted to create and edit Word and Excel documents on your iPhone, the wait is overMicrosoft is launching Office for iPhone, bringing Word, Excel and PowerPoint to the world's most popular smartphone.

The version of Office the iPhone's getting is Office Mobile, which is nearly identical to the apps that already exist on Windows Phone. It includes phone-friendly versions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint, but not other Office apps such as Outlook.

Creating a version of Office for iPhone fits with Microsoft's new strategy of treating its services as platform-agnostic, and it comes to iOS long after other Microsoft apps, including OneNote and Lync. It also fits with Microsoft offering Office 365 as a subscription service, accessible from many devices, rather than a one-time download for one machine. Read more...

Hands On With iOS 7: It’s Just the Beginning

When Tim Cook unveiled iOS 7 at WWDC this week, he called it "the biggest change to iOS since the original iPhone."

He's rightiOS 7 isn't just a visual overhaul of Apple's venerable mobile operating system; it's a near-total rethink of many of the core paradigms that have come to make iOS, well, iOS.

iOS 7 looks different, sure, but even in beta, it feels different, too. As Marco Arment wrote on his blog, this "isn't just a new skin."

Interactions and Animations

Interactions and animations are much less subtle on iOS 7. Ken Burns-style transitions abound, making it feel both modern and slightly disorienting. Tapping on an icon or on a folder diagonally zooms in on its content. Tapping away or pressing the home button zooms back out. Read more...

Apple has shown the world the future of its iOS software — and it's gorgeous

As Craig Federighi, Apple's senior vice-president of software engineering, took us through slides during the WWDC keynote that revealed beautiful translucent layers and genuinely useful features such the Control Center, I'm sure I wasn't the only iPhone user thinking, "Take my money now."

Now that we're moving further away from the reality distortion field that accompanies every Apple event, however, it's worth asking: What did Apple really unveil at WWDC 2013? Is iOS 7 truly innovative in mobile? Read more...

iOS 7: Closer to the Perfect Mobile OS

Apple_ios__comes_together

There is, I believe, a perfect mobile operating system, one ideal way of handling mobile activities on a smartphone or tablet. Apple, Google and Microsoft, maybe even Blackberry, are all headed to this common destination

But on Monday at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco, Apple proved that it’s the furthest down that road. And that should surprise no one.

iOS 7, the most radical reimagining of iOS since its inception in 2007, was met with cheers of approval and, in some spots in the cavernous Moscone hall, standing ovations. From where I sat, it was deserved.

We all knew this was coming: A flattening of the interface: Less overt polish and skeuomorphism, a new look and feel brought to you by the architect of Apple aesthetic, Jony Ive. Personally, I was worried. Apple’s iPhone interface remains my favorite among smartphone platforms. I didn’t see enough wrong with it to require a rethink, but then I probably wasn’t thinking deeply enough about the mobile OS. Read more...

Apple Unveils iOS 7, ‘Biggest Change Since the Original iPhone’

At WWDC 2013, Apple has officially unveiled the next generation of iOS, iOS 7.

Apple CEO Tim Cook introduced iOS 7, calling it "the biggest change to iOS since the introduction of the iPhone."

As rumored, iOS 7 has a less skeuomorphic look, with a more flat design and lots of whites tinged with color. That doesn't mean, however, that the new iOS is free from gradient or panache. Instead, it's a more modern take on what makes iOS iOS.

Control Center

New in iOS 7 is a Control Center. It's an area that can be activated from within any app that brings control to Wi-Fi, brightness and other frequently accessed settings. Read more...
