Abercrombie & Fitch: Good Marketing and Bad PR?

Good marketers know you have to stand for something. You can’t be all things to all people and still expect to build an iconic brand. An internal Microsoft video spoofing Google's Chrome ads has surfaced, warning consumers that the browser will track them across multiple devices.

The ad is an exact parody of Google's "Chome: Now Everywhere" ad (below), right down to the background music. But while Google presented its ubiquity as a virtue, Microsoft implies that something sinister is at work. "Following you. Monetizing you. Now everywhere," it concludes.

Though Microsoft hasn't been shy about calling out Google in its "Scroogled" campaign, this particular video was not intended for public consumption, but was leaked, a Microsoft spokesperson told Mashable. Read more...

Cue the eye roll

Synergy: The word everyone loves to hate, but can't help but use constantly. Synergy invades marketing lingo, financial discussions and management strategies alike — but does anyone really know what it means? Can you even say synergy these days without sounding like a total tool?

Generally, synergy refers to the cooperative interaction among groups. If you want to get more specific, synergy is the result when two or more forces interact and their combined effect is greater than the sum of their individual parts.

We're better together — that's the basic gist. Or, you will often hear that when synergy happens 1+1 no longer equals 2, instead 1+1=3. Get it? Read more...

Carr, who works as a senior marketing manager for ecommerce at the Chicago Tribune Media Group, is working on a side project called Alleva-Wave, a new business that provides pain relief to horses. The company doesn't have any real social media presence yet — not even a Facebook Page — but Carr notes that every time she puts a picture of a horse on her personal Facebook Page, she gets a lot of comments and reshares. "It's like dogs," she says. Read more...

Facebook for Small Business: Is It Worth It?

Many small businesses wonder if Facebook is really a good investment of their time and resources, particularly when getting into the Facebook newsfeed of their fans is such a challenge.

The Basics of Video Storytelling

For some time, marketers have been moving away from the traditional selling tactics of TV commercials. It is no longer enough to tell audiences that your product is great and that they should buy it. One of the buzzwords that characterizes the shift away from pure selling is ‘storytelling.'
