The next potentially big reality TV phenomenon won't actually require a TV. How’s that for innovation?

The Chernin Group is targeting the connected generation with @SummerBreak, a new series that will exist exclusively on social media platforms such as Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, YouTube and Vine.

The Premise

@SummerBreak tracks a group of high school seniors as they spend their last summer together and prepare for college — all while immersed in social media on various gadgets.

"People have their phones in their hands all day and all night, and these social platforms are really the way that young people communicate with each other," Billy Parks, the show's producer, told Mashable. "It's the way they tell stories and share information." Read more...

Yahoo Faces Advertising Challenges on Tumblr, Report Finds

Tumblr is growing rapidly, but its strongest demographic is one without much money to spend, making advertising on the blogging platform a tough proposition for its new owner, Yahoo.

Tumblr has garnered a lot of attention for its fast-growing blogging platform, which is now one of the most trafficked sites on the Web. But there are some less promising data points, as well, according to Compete, a company that provides analytics-based insights for digital marketers.

Tumblr’s blogs see less traffic than those powered by either WordPress or the outmoded Blogspot, according to Compete. And its users are younger and have lower incomes than those on the other blogging platforms.

“Most young people on Tumblr don’t have excess money to spend,” Compete said bluntly of its findings.

But Tumblr users seem to love the platform, and spend more than three times as long on the site as users do on competing blogging platforms.

But these users are not loyal to Yahoo and could leave Tumblr if ads clutter their experience there, Compete warned.

Compete concluded that advertisements will succeed on Tumblr if Yahoo is conservative with the amount of sponsored content it introduces and includes advertisements for reasonably priced goods that use visual content that adhere to the overall ethos of the site.

Barack Obama is checking your email, so clean up your inbox.

Many people freaked over news of NSA's PRISM Internet surveillance program, but one Tumblr decided to take a lighter approach to the scandal

Obama Is Checking Your Email posts photographs from the White House Flickr feed that show the president peering at a computer or smartphone. While the POTUS probably isn't laughing at your Hotmail account alongside Joe Biden, the reframing of context works perfectly

Note: PRISM reportedly only targets "non-citizens" that are "reasonably believed to be outside the country." So you're safe, Joe American. Read more...

Finally: A Free, Viable Analytics Dashboard for Tumblr

In November, Tumblr announced that it would finally give marketers access to analytics via a partnership with Union Metrics. The product proved pretty costly, however, with plans beginning at $500 per month.

On Thursday, Union Metrics announced it will soon launch a free beta version of its Tumblr analytics platform. Whereas its premium analytics dashboard is designed to allow marketing agencies and their clients to track a large number of blogs and category trends, this platform is designed for individual blogger use, said Hayes Davis, co-founder and CEO of Union Metrics.

The dashboard is much more robust than other free options on the market. Users can track performance, such as reblogs and likes, on posts individually and in aggregate, identify key amplifiers and analyze performance, tag and post type trends over time. Read more...

The Pursuit of Perfecting Your Content Will Yield Diminishing Returns

I’m not suggesting that you compromise your standards for quality, or jeopardize your business’ reputation by producing sub-par content, but be sure to stay focused on what is going to be valued by your audience and use them, their needs, and expectations as a gauge for ‘perfection.'

Tumblr’s Creative Director Leaves

Tumblr's creative director and fifth employee, Jacob Bijani, has left the company less than two weeks after it was acquired by Yahoo.

In a post to his personal Tumblr, Bijani writes that he plans to take some time off "to digest the last few years" and that he has "about a dozen different projects planned" — projects, we assume, he'll want to get started after that break.

Bijani's post, in full:

Today was my last day at Tumblr.

Five years ago I joined a team of four as Tumblr’s first designer, creative director, and product engineer. That team has since grown to 182 of the most wonderful and talented people around.

I’m so proud of what we’ve all created together, and it’s been a privilege to contribute to something beloved by so many. I can’t wait to see what’s next for the product; I’m sure it will be nothing short of incredible.

There’s still a lot more I want to accomplish, and I’m really excited about this next chapter. For now, I’m going to take some time off to digest the last few years. I have about a dozen different projects planned, so expect more from me soon! Read more...

Original Tumblr Designer Leaves the Company

tumblr, blogging, blogging platforms, yahoo, jacob bijaniJacob Bijani, Tumblr’s first designer, has left the company, he said today in a blog post.

Bijani first worked for Tumblr as a freelancer, beginning in the summer of 2008. He joined the company later that year. He was, founder David Karp said at the time, “the first person we’ve hired who’s younger than me.”

Bijani’s departure comes just weeks after Tumblr was acquired by Yahoo, which has a poor track record with major startup acquisitions. Bijani nevertheless expressed optimism about Tumblr’s future.

“I’m so proud of what we’ve all created together, and it’s been a privilege to contribute to something beloved by so many. I can’t wait to see what’s next for the product; I’m sure it will be nothing short of incredible,” he said.

Bijani said he planned to take “some time off to digest the last few years.”

He didn’t immediately respond to a request to elaborate.
