See How Much the Next ‘Call of Duty’ Graphics Improve

Call of Duty: Ghosts represents a significant graphical upgrade from the previous titles in the series, according to publisher Activision.

To prove this, it showed a video during Tuesday's Xbox One unveiling that shows footage from the upcoming Ghosts compared to footage from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

The video's narration, said developer Infinity Ward, is able to do in-depth scans of subjects, including a Navy Seal-trained dog, and then translate them into the game world. You can see fine details on the models, like the scars on the dog's nose or bruising on a human hand. The advancements are all thanks to Infinity Ward's new engine, built with next-generation consoles in mind. Read more...

Watch Your Heartbeat on Xbox One’s New Kinect

Two years and millions of units later, Microsoft Kinect motion and voice capture and control system for the Xbox 360 is an unparalleled success. So it came as little surprise that the powerful controller is now an essential part of the Xbox One console that Microsoft will ship sometime later this year.

The new, somewhat larger — dare I say boxy -– Kinect is vastly more powerful than the one Microsoft had been selling for $99. During a post-Xbox One unveiling panel with Xbox’s Major Nelson (A.K.A. Larry Hryb), Todd Holmdahl, the corporate vice president of Xbox Hardware, outlined the sensor’s new capabilities: Read more...

Microsoft made an hour-long presentation that emphasized the Xbox One's new hardware, impressive graphics, connected interfaces and upcoming games. While we'll learn more from the company at its E3 presentation June 10, Mashable wanted to break down what we know right now about the Xbox One.

Xbox One’s New Controller: Hands On

In the run-up to Tuesday’s big Microsoft Xbox One reveal, many pondered the fate of the beloved Xbox 360 controller, perhaps the best gaming controller in the business. Would Microsoft make it radically different? Bigger? Unwieldy? Add a touchpad like Sony? Today we have our answer. It’s different and yet, based on what I now know and have experienced firsthand, it’s also somehow better.

Let’s start with the look and feel. Yes, it’s black (obviously, you could always get Xbox 360 controllers in a variety of colors). This is something I guessed at, as most modern-day gaming hardware favors the dark over the light. Despite the brushed finished, the controller is not rubberized. It’s hard plastic that feels good in your hands. It’ll be interesting to see how that finish responds to hours of game play. Will it make your hands more or less sweaty? Read more...

Why ‘Dots’ Is the Most Scarily Addictive Social Game Yet

About 12 years ago, I happened to take my Palm Pilot (remember those?) to a friend's house. A friend of a friend asked if she could borrow it. Sure, I said. She proceeded to download a game called Bubblet, then curled up on the couch with it for the next hour

My curiosity was piqued, and soon I, too, was a Bubblet junkie. It was a simple game — you got a screen full of bubbles and double-tapped to pop connected ones of the same color. Once those popped, the others fell down, Tetris-like, to create new strings of bubbles

You could tap away like a maniac at small strings, but eventually you'd learn the strategy of creating longer ones, which scored more. The important thing was that the game kept your average score, which you were constantly trying to improve. Read more...

Xbox One Will Currently Not Play Xbox 360 Games

The newly announced Xbox One will not be able to play previous generation Xbox 360 games, Microsoft confirmed Tuesday.

The Xbox One is designed on an x86 architecture, on a new eight-core chip. The Xbox 360 uses a Xenon processor, with PowerPC architecture, making the systems incompatible

"The Xbox One hardware is not compatible with Xbox 360 games. We designed Xbox One to play an entirely new generation of games — games that are architected to take full advantage of state-of-the-art processors and the infinite power of the cloud. We care very much about the investment people have made in Xbox 360 and will continue to support it with a pipeline of new games and new apps well into the future," a Microsoft spokesperson said.
