Amazon's Friends and Family Gifting feature is getting a little more social with the Tuesday launch of a tool that allows you to create and send group gift cards to your Facebook friends on their birthdays.

By connecting your Facebook and Amazon accounts, you can keep tabs on your friends' birthdays and prepare group gift cards in advance. To get started, head over to Amazon.com/birthdaygift, select a friend with an upcoming birthday and privately invite friends (via Facebook) to contribute to a gift card. Participants can contribute as little as $1 and as much as $25, and can also invite other friends to join, a spokesperson for Amazon told Mashable. The card, personalized with your message, is delivered to the recipient's Facebook wall on his or her birthday. Read more...

Apple's share of the e-book market is bigger than many previously thought

Taking the witness stand at the antitrust trial between Apple and the DOJ on Wednesday, Apple executive Keith Moerer revealed that the company obtained a 20% share of the e-book market shortly after launching its iBookstore in 201, and has maintained that share in the two years since. "E-book sales grew 100% last year at the iBookstore and it had over 100 million customers," Moerer said, per Publisher's Weekly.

Asymco analyst Horace Dediu estimated in February that Apple's share of the e-book market was 24%. Other industry observers claimed at the time that the estimate was overzealous, pegging Apple's share at 10% and allocating 65% of the market to Amazon and 25% to Barnes & Noble. Read more...

Nook Seeks an Edge With $2 E-Books

It's not easy being Nook. With Amazon Kindle's dominant share of the e-book market — not to mention all of the exclusives Amazon is landing through its own publishing imprints and self-publishing platform — the Barnes & Noble-owned subsidiary has struggled to convince e-book readers to shop at its e-bookstore over its rival's.

That's why Nook is now investing in original content. On Thursday, the company unveiled Nook Snaps, a collection of short fiction and narrative non-fiction commissioned by Nook. Three to five works, each at least 5,000 words and priced at $1.99, will be added to the collection every other month. Read more...

After operating AmazonFresh in its hometown of Seattle for the past six years, Amazon is reportedly ready to expand its online grocery business to Los Angeles as soon as this week. San Francisco could follow later this year.

This is according to Reuters, which reported that if Los Angeles and San Francisco "go well," AmazonFresh may roll out to 20 other urban markets next year, perhaps some outside the United States. One on-the-record source, analyst and consultant Bill Bishop, said that Amazon is targeting as many as 40 markets.

Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment. An Amazon spokesperson said the company has nothing to announce at this time. Read more...

Study: Amazon’s Ad Business Is Bigger Than Twitter’s

Many are aware of Amazon's robust retail and web-hosting businesses, but less are familiar with its advertising business, which is rapidly becoming a significant player in the space.

Amazon brought in $450 million in advertising in revenue last year, according to eMarketer estimates published Tuesday. The company managed to increase its advertising business by nearly two-thirds between 2011 and 2012, and is expected to grow it by another half this year — to $660 million. This makes Amazon's ad business even bigger than Twitter's, which eMarketer previously estimated would generate $580 million this year. Read more...

Are you upset that Dora the Explorer is no longer on Netflix? It might be time to switch to Amazon Prime, where Dora, SpongeBob and hundreds of other Viacom TV shows will now have a home.

Amazon and Viacom announced a new multi-year licensing agreement on Tuesday that brings thousands of episodes Nickelodeon, Nick Jr., MTV and Comedy Central shows to Amazon Prime. The deal is an expansion of a previous deal Viacom and Amazon signed in 2012, and comes in the wake of the loss of Viacom content from streaming rival Netflix.

While the terms of the new agreement weren't disclosed, people familiar with the deal told Mashable that it was "in the hundreds of millions" and classified it as Amazon's biggest content deal to date. Read more...

Amazon Shaves $20 Off Kindle Fire HD Tablets for Father’s Day

Dads are notoriously hard to shop for, but Amazon aims to make the gift-giving choice easier this Father's Day by trimming the cost of its Kindle Fire HD tablet line.

From today until Saturday, June 8, Amazon is offering a $20 discount for its 7-inch Kindle Fire HD ($199), the 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD ($269) and the 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD with 4G LTE ($399). To access the deal, use the promotional code DADSFIRE at checkout

It's important to note that these devices aren't ad-free — they come with sponsored messages that appear as screensavers when the screen lock is on. It will cost you another $15 to make them disappear. Another stipulation is the HD tablets don't come with wall chargers, so the $20 you save with the deal can go toward purchasing a plug. But there are ways around it: Tell Dad to connect a micro USB wire to a computer for charging. (This could be a pain when traveling on vacation, though.) Read more...

Content Is King! Amazon Invests Millions In Original TV Shows…But Why?

Amazon’s move to create original programming is an interesting one, and I believe it’s reflective of a bigger movement in brand publishing that’s just beginning to spread its wings. Prime subscribers are Amazon’s prime customers: they spend a great deal more per average than everyday customers.
