SoundCloud Announces NYC Office Plans and a New Hire from Pandora

SoundCloud, headquartered in Berlin, plans to open a new office alongside a cacophony of honking taxis, rumbling subway lines, and people who aren’t afraid to speak their minds.

The New York City office for the sound-sharing community will appear “in the coming months,” the company said. Along with the new digs will come former Pandora executive Dan Gerber, whom SoundCloud has tapped to lead brand revenue initiatives for the audio-sharing community.

“We’re keeping all options open for the new office location at this time, but we are looking for a neighborhood that best encompasses an intersection of both art and technology,” said Kristina Weise, U.S. senior PR manager at SoundCloud.

As for Gerber, the former national director of strategic partnerships was a key player in connecting Pandora with Pepsi for the Grammys and with Chase for Pandora’s Summer-Themed Genre Stations. His strategies incorporated digital, mobile, audio and live events.

“Coming off our Pro Partner announcement in early March, we have been inundated with numerous brands taking interest in our beta,”  SoundCloud explained in a blog post. “We realized that in order to best serve this community, we had to bring on a professional with the experience to continue to develop partnerships and to strengthen and ignite relationships.”

The company’s current New York-based audio partners include This American LifeAudibleSiriusThe EconomistPenguinHarperSplitsider, and Baratunde.

Gerber starts in June and will be looking for new talent this summer.

“We’re always open to hiring remarkable talent at any position,” added Weise. “In the coming months, we will be focused on building out Dan’s team. Our jobs page will be updated with more NYC-based positions shortly.”

TwitterTwitter Opens its Self-Serve Advertising Platform to All U.S. Users (SocialTimes)
Twitter will open its advertising platform to all users in the United States, the company announced on Tuesday. The self-serve advertising suite allows account administrators to run their own campaigns by promoting their accounts or individual tweets to specific groups within the social network, and to track the results through Twitter analytics. CNET The microblogging company has allowed organizations to pay for promoted tweets and promoted accounts since last March, but it was on an invite-only basis. “Business has been on Twitter since Day 1,” Kevin Weil, Twitter senior director of product for revenue, said at TechCrunch Disrupt. “We’re very excited everyone will be able to leverage Twitter advertising.” Adweek Since Twitter’s ad platform operates on an auction-based model a la Google’s AdWords — and since the laws of supply and demand dictate that if demand increases but supply hold steady, then price increases — Twitter’s ad rates should trend upward. While self-service advertisers can take advantage of Twitter’s bevy of targeting options — targeting by interest, keyword, device, gender and geolocation — the location-targeting capabilities may leave some local marketers wanting. AllTwitter In other Twitter news, in a memo sent to news organizations, Twitter has urged all reporters and media firms to work harder to keep their accounts secure, following the hacking of the AP’s Twitter account last week. The document partially reads: “These incidents appear to be spear phishing attacks that target your corporate email. Promoting individual awareness of these attacks within your organization and following the security guidelines … is vital to preventing abuse of your Twitter accounts.” Bloomberg Following a move by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to allow companies to share market-sensitive news via social media, the AP breach threatens Twitter CEO Dick Costolo’s ability to establish Twitter as a trusted source of information ahead of a possible initial public offering. The false information from the AP account, which said there were explosions at the White House and President Barack Obama had been injured, came after repeated attempts by hackers to access to AP reporters’ passwords, the news agency said.

Google to Integrate App Activities into Search (CNET)
Google plans to integrate information on app activities into its Search page, giving users insight into what peers are doing and linking Google+ more closely with Google’s other offerings. Seth Sternberg, product management director for Google+, and Ardan Arac, a product manager at Google, said the company will now integrate information it has culled from apps with the company’s flagship search site. Mashable “Searching for Fandango, for example, will show the top movies among Google users. And when you click on a movie, you’ll go directly to its page on Fandango,” Google said in a statement. It will be rolling out the feature to Search in desktop — not mobile yet — in the next few weeks. TechCrunch The launch apps are music and movie ones, which lend themselves to lists of top content based on listens and ratings. Google is rolling this out in the next few weeks for Fandango, SoundCloud, Deezer, Flixster, Slacker Radio, Songza and TuneIn.

6 Places Video Creators Can Find Royalty-Free Music

A great soundtrack can take your video project to the next level. Finding inspiration is easy; the hard part is finding music that’s affordable and doesn’t violate any copyright laws.

Luckily, video-sharing sites like YouTube and Vimeo have started building their own music libraries for creators to borrow from if they can’t rely on talented friends, and there are plenty of songwriters online who are willing to share their tracks as well.

Many of the songs on these sites are completely free to use for your project, with no royalties or licensing fees. For the tracks that aren’t free, you’ll pay a one-time licensing fee to download the music and you’ll be supporting an artist.

Here are a few of our favorites:

ccMixter

If you have some editing skills, this collection of samples, remixes, and a cappella tracks is great for incorporating into your own music to use in your video. Beastie Boys, DJ Vadim, and other well-known artists have tracks on here that are legal and free to sample under a Creative Commons license.

Final Cut Pro X

The editing software itself is pricey, but it comes with 1,300 royalty-free sound effects that you can download through a free software update. They can be accessed through the built-in Music and Sound Browser.

Incompetech

Our own web video team recommends composer Kevin MacLeod, who has a treasure chest of tracks in styles ranging from “Disco and Lounge” to “Elegant Piano” that he allows other people to use for free under a Creative Commons license. (Ask him for a quote if you want to commission something original.) The site also has instructions on how to get a Sans Attribution license for television or radio, and how to properly attribute the pieces on YouTube so the videos won’t be taken down.

SoundCloud

This socially savvy network has a special section just for tracks that were uploaded under a Creative Commons license. This means you’re free to use them as long as you follow the guidelines established by the artist. This is a good place to find tracks that don’t sound like background music. Just like ccMixter, SoundCloud has a few artists like Snoop Lion that will lay down a beat and invite other musicians to make a remix.

YouTube Video Editor

Inside the YouTube video editor, you’ll find a library of pre-approved tracks that you can use in your video free of charge. You won’t recognize most of the songs (although there is a cover of “Bridge Over Troubled Water” in there somewhere), but there are many styles to choose from to suit your mood.

Vimeo Music Store

Vimeo also has a catalog of songs for video creators to use. Some of them are free, while others start at $1.99 per download. As on YouTube, the selection here is outstanding.

Redesigned SoundCloud Apps Include Playlists

SoundCloud has released new versions of its iPhone and Android apps for recording and sharing audio tracks.

The most noteworthy change is the addition of “sets,” which are basically playlists that listeners can curate and share. A new search filter will make the sets from other community members easier to discover.

This feature was previously available only on the desktop.

To make room for this and other features,  the “record” button has been moved to the “more” menu for iPhone users and the side bar for Android users.

iPhone users will also see that the interface has been redesigned and the app icon has changed.

Users can download version 2.5 on Google Play and the Apple App Store. The company added that updates for iPad are coming soon.

Flattr Puts Your Money Where Your ‘Like’ Is

social media, social networks, content, twitter, instagram, facebook, github, soundcloudFlattr today launched a service that allows users to contribute financially to content producers simply by clicking “like.”

The move is a tweak to the Swedish company’s previous model, requiring publishers to embed its widget on their websites.

“We are on a mission to help creators get money for the value they create for all of us. We believe that the way people pay must be in line with the way people behave online,” the company said in a blog post.

Users set the monthly amount that goes into their Flattr account. At the end of the month, the amount will be divided evenly among each of the likes and stars the user has clicked over the course of the month.

The service works with Twitter, Soundcloud, Grooveshark, App.net, the open-source software platform Github, Flickr and Instagram. It does not work on Facebook or Google+.

Listen: Vice President Joe Biden’s New Audio Series on SoundCloud

U.S. Vice President Joe Biden is sharing his experiences at the White House with the public in a new audio series called “Being Biden.” He posted his first recordings using the social audio platform SoundCloud.

His website had the details:

In this audio series Vice President Biden will tell the story behind a photo – of where he was, why it matters to him, and how the experience fits into the broader narrative of this Administration. From meetings at the White House to travels around the country, the Vice President will share his perspective in candid, behind-the-scenes snapshots. In other words, he’ll explain what it’s like “Being Biden.”

Although SoundCloud recently updated its platform to add a visual element to certain profile pages and audio tracks, Biden’s pictures today are on the website rather than the White House SoundCloud page.

In this image, Biden shows his sporty side while serving rolls at the Whitehall Neck Sportsman Club’s Wild Game Dinner. The event was held at the Volunteer Fire Hall in Leipsic, DE, on March 4, 2013. In the audio track, Biden talks about the event and a larger issue: gun control laws.

SoundCloud Introduces ‘Moving Sounds’ Slideshow Creator

SoundCloud has released ‘Moving Sounds,’ a tool for creating slideshows with images and audio tracks. Launched in beta today with a handful of partners, the creative tool also represents a new form of advertising within the audio-based community.

From a simple music video to an online trailer leading up to a movie release, creators will be able to use Moving Sounds to add a visual element to the site’s main draw: a tool for easily uploading and distributing large audio files.

“We’re always interested in this sort of interplay between sound and visuals,” explained SoundCloud co-founder and CEO Alexander Ljung. ”The whole thing from the beginning of visualizing sound in the waveform was a way to take something more abstract, less tangible as sound, actually put it on the screen and make it easier interact with it. I feel like this is the next step of that and it adds an even more visual component while still having sound at the heart of it.”

The company is testing this service as part of a new Pro Partner package with artists Snoop Lion and The-Dream, audio partner Chris Hardwick’s Nerdist, non-profit organization The Recording Academy producers of The GRAMMYs, and brands Red Bull Sound Select and Blue Bottle Coffee.

These partners will be able to promote their profiles within the users’ ‘Who to Follow’ section. Their posts can be shared and expanded in users’ feeds, but they won’t be forced on the listening community.

This Red Bull slideshow, for example, is a music track promoting a live event, “120 Hours in Austin” at SXSW, rather than an energy drink jingle.

“It really fits into the experience of SoundCloud,” said Ljung.

Snoop Lion’s reggae track, “Lighters Up” (featuring Mavado & Popcaan), shows stills of the artist playing music and, not surprisingly, lighting up.

These elements may be incorporated into the larger SoundCloud community once the beta test is complete.

For everyone else, SoundCloud has condensed its premium subscriptions from four tiers into two tiers (one for up to four hours of uploads, one unlimited) and has also lowered its prices. The Pro accounts let artists and brands showcase their best content, see statistics on their tracks and their listeners, and go into “quiet mode” if they want to hide their play counts or comments.

Said Ljung, ” we wanted to make it simpler and more accessible.”
