‘XCOM’ for iPad: Same Great Game Is Now Travel Size

When Firaxis Games announced in March that turn-based strategy giant XCOM: Enemy Unknown was coming to iPad, it was unclear how it would pack a huge, immersive console and PC title into an app

Thankfully, XCOM: Enemy Unknown, which launches at midnight Thursday, doesn't skimp on what's necessary: great gameplay. (We rated it one of the best games of 2012.) While there might have been some visual compromises to scale the game down to just 3.2 gigs, which is still a lot on a tablet, the functionality hasn't been touched.

For the uninitiated, XCOM: Enemy Unknown was a reboot of the the popular X-COM strategy franchise from the 1990s. It was a risky gamble by 2K Games, Firaxis and Creative Director Jake Solomon, who said it was his dream since joining Firaxis to reboot the franchiseEnemy Unknown challenges players to lead a team of elite operatives to wipe out aliens invading Earth, while balancing resources and keeping individual countries, which are funding missions, from leaving the alliance. 7 Gadgets for the Ultimate Connected Living Room

Stop me if you've heard this one before: The living room is about to become totally connected. For the past decade or longer, users were promised a world where live TV, digital video from Netflix, Hulu and YouTube, and purchased or downloaded content would all be available from one interface using one remote. A decade later, we've failed to reach that apex of what remains the true holy grail for the connected living room, but we're getting closer than ever.

Even five years ago, the idea that it would be normal to have a wireless set-top box connected to a television set seemed far-fetched. Today, it's hard to imagine a world without having access to Netflix on your big screen. Read more...

Although the iPad and the iPad mini were largely left out of any announcements made at Apple's big Worldwide Developers Conference earlier this week, the company has posted pictures of the new iOS 7 software running on its tablet devices.

iOS 7 — which will debut this fall — was only unveiled for the iPhone, leaving many wondering when the update to the mobile operating system and all of its new features would come to the iPad.

Tech website iGen — and later spotted by 9to5 Mac — spotted that Apple updated its iOS 7 features page to include pictures of how it would look on the iPad or iPad mini. Read more...

Apple senior Vice President Eddy Cue told a Manhattan courtroom Thursday that he rushed through the process of making deals with publishers — so that Steve Jobs could unveil the iBooks store on stage while the Apple founder was still alive

Cue is at the center of an antitrust trial where Apple stands accused of fixing prices of e-books at an artificially high level. Department of Justice prosecutors have described Cue as "the chief ringleader" of a price-fixing effort, a charge he vehemently denied. The five major publishers involved in the lawsuit have all made out-of-court settlements with the DOJ. Read more...

With plans to save African wildlife, drop beer on concertgoers and penetrate tornadoes, we wonder: Are there any tasks drones won't try?

This next airborne, drone-based development might not necessarily come as a shock, but it’s sure to enhance (or at least differentiate) your dining experience.

London-based YO! Sushi, renowned for being the first sushi chain in the UK to deliver food via conveyor belt, is taking its service innovation to the next level: It’s introducing the world’s first flying restaurant tray (see image below).

In less than 48 hours, the first official Apple event in seven months will be underway. Apple hasn't thrown one of its product parties since the unveiling of the iPad mini back in October, and Monday morning's keynote to kick off its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) promises no less than a detailed look at the future of the company's two major platforms: iOS and OS X.

Mashable will be live at San Francisco's Moscone Center to report on what happens, but there have been the usual rumors, leaks and speculation that typically lead up to an Apple event. We've examined them all and determined which are solid, and which are suspect. Read more...

Most magazines witnessed a slight decline in print ad sales in the first quarter of the year, with a few exceptions in the food, beauty and fashion categories. But while print sales were lackluster, one area did see a nice uptick in growth: sales of ads on iPad editions.

The Publishers Information Bureau surveyed 58 magazine titles about the number of print ad pages and iPad ad units each sold between January 1 and the end of March. On average, those titles sold around the same number of print ad pages as they had in the same period the previous year. Those titles did, however, manage to sell nearly a quarter (23.6%) more ad units on their iPad apps. As such, the iPad now accounts for 56% of all magazine ad units sold across print and iPad (at least for those surveyed). Read more...

The United States International Trade Commission (ITC) has placed a U.S import ban on a number of older iPhone and iPad devices, claiming that those units infringe on patents owned by Samsung.

Specifically having to do with the "apparatus and method for encoding/decoding transport format combination indicator in CDMA mobile communication system," the ban covers the iPhone 4 and below and iPad 3 and below; but only on AT&T

Newer models of the iPhone and iPad, and those not on AT&T’s network, do not use the technology and are not affected under the ban.

Samsung’s patent complaint was originally filed in June 2011, with complaints pertaining to five patents Read more...

On Monday, a United States government lawyer formally accused Apple of conspiring with publishers to artificially boost e-book prices.

The trial against Apple comes a year after the Justice Department first accused Apple of working with five publishers — Penguin, HarperCollins, Simon & Schuster, Hachette and Macmillan — to boost prices and spite e-book market leader Amazon.

"Apple told publishers that Apple — and only Apple — could get prices up in their industry," Justice Department lawyer Lawrence Buterman said during opening arguments, as quoted by Reuters. An Apple attorney characterized the deal as a legitimate business decision. Read more...

Shazam on the iPad just got a whole lot better.

The company launched a completely updated version of its tablet app Thursday, with a new discovery home screen, and an auto-tagging feature that can determine what music, television shows, and even ads are playing around you, identifying them automatically.

He says that Shazam currently has more than 300 million global users accessing the app, equating to an astounding ten million queries a day. Growth over the past year has been particularly prevalent in the iPad app, which has seen triple-digit growth in the number of downloads. Read more...
