The Guardian's international editions are proliferatingand soon all of its websites will be united under a single domain, theguardian.com.

Currently, The Guardian operates three websites. The primary one is guardian.co.uk. It has a second URL for its U.S. operation, guardiannews.com, which redirects to guardian.co.uk on section and article pages, and a subdomain for mobile, m.guardian.co.uk. Soon, it will set up a fourth URL for its Australian edition..

The Guardian describes the move as a symbolic one. "As we set out on our mission to become a unified, global [organization], we now have one domain we can rally behind," Guardian U.S. CEO Michael Bloom said in an interview with Mashable last week. Why Brands Need Two-Factor Authentication on Twitter

Internetsecurity
Feed-twFeed-fb

Major brands with a presence on Twitter are being encouraged to implement Twitter's new two-factor authentication feature to help ward off hackers, and for good reason. If you look at recent hacks against companies such as Burger King, The Onion and the Associated Press — which even negatively impacted financial markets — it's clear that Twitter has become a hotbed for account hijacking. Finally, companies can increase their chances of warding off such attacks

Before Wednesday, all users were logging in to Twitter the same way — those with two followers and those with 2 million. Now, Twitter added a security method called login verification, which is essentially like double-locking your door at night to decrease the chances of an intruder breaking in Read more...

ESPN is laying off as many as 400 employees Tuesday in an effort to boost profit margins, according to reports.

A spokesperson for the Disney-owned network confirmed in an e-mail to Mashable that layoffs were taking place. The spokesperson declined to discuss numbers or details, saying only that the company is "implementing changes... to enhance our continued growth while smartly managing costs."

"While difficult, we are confident that it will make us more competitive, innovative and productive," the spokesperson added.

The staff cuts are surprising and unexpected, given the profitability of ESPN's businessAccording to Deadspin, which broke news of the layoffs, Disney is asking all of its divisons to reduce costs. A source who said he was laid off "out of the blue" after nine and a half years at the company told Deadspin that ESPN isn't meeting its profit margin requirements, in part because of the lavish sums it's paying to secure rights for live events coverage. The technology group is among the hardest hit, with "at least" 40 layoffs in that division, Deadspin said. Read more...

Fred Wilson: Yahoo Will Put Tumblr on Same Level as Facebook, Twitter

One of Tumblr's earliest investors, venture capitalist Fred Wilson, says the Yahoo deal will lead to an influx of advertising on the platform and bring it to the level of Facebook and Yahoo in advertisers' minds.

"Tumblr has been pushing their native advertising system into the marketplace for the past year," Wilson told interviewer John Battelle Tuesday at the CM Summit in New York. "It's a beautiful system. They say to a marketer, 'Create a Tumblog. Post what you want to the Tumblog and that could be imagery, it could be video it could be GIFs, it could be anything and then we will allow you to promote that throughout the community, much like the way Twitter does.'" ‘Wired’ Completely Overhauls Print Magazine

Wired-rotated-2

Wired is debuting a new look for its June issue, which hits newsstands Tuesday. The magazine has been completely made over by Scott Dadich, who before being named editor-in-chief last November worked as creative director of Wired from 2006 to 2010.

There was something about the previous version of Wired — the bright colors, bold fonts, perhaps the splashy photos and graphics — that made it feel distinctly like a magazine about science and technology for men. Not so with the new edition of Wired, which feels more like Wired meets T: The New York Times Style Magazine meets The New Yorker. With its modern, almost muted aesthetic, it feels more like a lifestyle magazine — and a rather sophisticated, thoughtful one at that. Read more...

A little something extra is now arriving on the iPads of Esquire subscribers every week.

The monthly men's lifestyle magazine launched a weekly, ad-supported edition dubbed Esquire Weekly, which will be automatically delivered to tablet subscribers at no additional charge. The issue will arrive every Thursday, except the Thursdays when the monthly magazine is released. Non-subscribers can pick up a copy for $0.99 per issue.

Each installment promises to contain seven pieces of original writing spanning culture, politics, humor and food, alongside some repurposed content from Esquire.com. Most of that repurposed content will be fresh for tablet subscribers, since the overlap between tablet subscribers and Esquire.com readers is "nominal," Joe Keohane, senior editor of Esquire Digital, told Mashable. (David Granger, editor-in-chief of Esquire, has previously said the overlap is less than 10%.) Read more...
