Report: Yahoo Bidding for Hulu

Yahoo

The roster of companies interested in acquiring a stake in Hulu is growing. In addition to The Chernin Group (in partnership with Providence Equity), Guggenheim Digital, DirecTV and Time Warner Cable — whose bids were reported on Thursday night and Friday morning — Yahoo, private equity firm KKR and talent agency William Morris Endeavor (in partnership with Silver Lake) have also placed bids, according to AllThingsD and Bloomberg.

AllThingsD reported earlier this month that Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer had met with Hulu executives, but after the company dropped $1.1 billion on Tumblr and another several million for gaming platform PlayerScale earlier this week, it seemed that the company might not go ahead with a bid. But that appears not to be the case — and even after the Tumblr acquisition, Yahoo has around $4 billion in cash to spend. Read more...

Yahoo Reportedly Bidding on Hulu

yahoo bidding on hulu

Ermolaev Alexander / Shutterstock.com

The video streaming service Hulu is amassing a long list of suitors, and Yahoo has reportedly joined the bunch.

The bid was reported by Reuters and AllThingsD, though Yahoo declined to comment for them as for SocialTimes.

The move in many ways would make sense for Yahoo, which many of its recent short-lived CEOs, most notably Ross Levinsohn, referred to as a media company. Yet, Marissa Mayer has seemed to re-orient Yahoo as a tech company.

Other bidders for Hulu, owned by News Corp, Disney and Comcast, include Directtv, Time Warner Cable, Guggenheim Digital and The Chernin Group.

Hulu’s brought in nearly $700 million in revenue last year and continues to draw new users. Its corporate parents are allegedly deciding whether to sell the property.

On the heels of Yahoo's $1.1 billion acquisition of Tumblr, Hulu is suddenly snapping up bids left and right.

The Chernin Group is run by former News Corp. executive Peter Chernin. Ross Levinsohn, who served as interim chief executive officer of Yahoo before Marissa Mayer took the helm last year, is now the chief executive of Guggenheim Digital Media, which owns a number of media assets including trade publications Adweek and The Hollywood Reporter. A source close to the matter told The Wall Street Journal that DirecTV is mulling an agreement that could expand its TV Everywhere service, which lets subscribers access programming from the web and on mobile devices. Cutting Cable May Not Save You Money

Tvblur

So you think you're saving around $100 every month by cutting the cable cord. That may be true today, but streaming could get a lot more expensive as companies launch pay-per-view channels.

Last week, YouTube, the largest source for free video entertainment, unveiled its first paid channels. And a number of companies, whose owners believe their content is attractive enough to get people to pay for it, jumped on board, too. In less than a week, available channels climbed from 30 to more than 50, ranging in price from $0.99 to $9.99 per month (the latter a package that includes seven channels). Read more...

SFGate/Business Insider Few people have worn or even seen Google Glass, but early reviews have made businesses and government officials wary. Already, Google Glass has already been banned by a Seattle dive bar and in some Las Vegas casinos.

Facebook Chat Heads, Stickers Coming To iOS (AllFacebook)
Although Apple will likely not cede the iPhone’s home screen for Facebook Home, iOS users Tuesday got access to Chat Heads capability. Facebook announced that iPhone and iPad users had this update sometime Tuesday and would be able to use the company’s newest messaging feature. TIME/Techland While they look similar to their Android, um, ancestors, iOS’s Chat Heads only pop up when you’re using the Facebook app — in iOS, there’s no way to implement them everywhere in the operating system so that they show up no matter which app you’re using. Still, they should be a fun and useful addition. AllThingsD Other new features include “stickers” (everyone has to have stickers in their messaging app), as well as a new version of the iPad layout, which mirrors the version Facebook recently brought to the desktop News Feed. This might have been what a Facebook executive was talking about Monday, when Bloomberg reported that the company was talking about making a “version of its new mobile software for the iPhone.” Inside Facebook Link shares and page like stories include larger images, and check-ins include a map. CNET In related Facebook news, just days after its U.S. debut, Facebook Home is ready for download in other countries. Facebook made the push to international territories Tuesday as part of a colonization plan to get its freshest social-networking features in front of many people as possible — and to up engagement levels, of course.

Twitter in Talks with Viacom, NBC to Stream TV Content Within Tweets (AllTwitter)
Twitter is close to securing a partnership deal with two major television networks to bring high-quality video content and advertising to the micro-blogging social platform, says Bloomberg, citing sources that are familiar with the matter. Twitter has been holding talks with Viacom and Comcast Corp’s NBC Universal, seeking to add more entertainment and news video that would stream within tweets directly on Twitter. Variety However, a source familiar with the discussions said the content from NBCU and Viacom would be short clips — not full-length episodes, a la Hulu. The potential deals would be similar to agreements the company already has with ESPN and Turner Broadcasting System, which embed video links in their Twitter feeds, the source said. GigaOM Such a move would make perfect sense considering Twitter’s current trajectory, as the company has worked to build up support for visual media and partnerships with companies in the television industry. Twitter has clearly realized that television and live broadcast events give the company a unique opportunity to harness online conversations happening at a particular moment and then serve up advertising based around those events.

Top 5 Cat-Themed April Fool’s Pranks

Catpy April Mewls Day! It’s no secret that the Internet loves cats. Some of today’s cleverest pranks involve the furry creatures. Here’s a rundown of a few we thought were the cat’s meow.

5. Vimeo Becomes Vimeow: You’ve got to put those cat videos somewhere, and Vimeo[w] wants to be your host.

4. Hulu is promoting some fake shows from real shows in its carousel today, including Itchy & Scratchy, the cartoon the characters of “The Simpsons” watch.

3. Oberlin becomes Meowberlin: It’s a big edgier for an institution of higher learning to go for a Catpril Fools joke, but Oberlin has pulled it off with aplumb. For users clicking to get more information about the kitteh image featured on the homepage, Oberlin has provided link to a local animal rescue organization, tugging at our bleeding heartstrings.

2. Mobile design optimized for cats: We like this joke because it’s not entirely fake. There is a YouTube channel for cats, and just a couple of weeks ago Friskies hosted a hackathon for mobile apps for cats.

“YouTube has recently been dominated by cats. Even the simplest video of a cat using an iPad app easily gathers millions of viewers. Bowing to this takeover, our clients are increasingly asking us, “How can we improve our site or app for cats?” With their lack of opposable thumbs and ever-shifting focus, cats are certainly a challenging target audience,” said the Nielsen Norman Group.

Early research has found that “Rapid double and triple taps are common among felines, especially kittens.”

1. The army has a sense of humor, but Grumpy Cat is annoyed. She’s annoyed, among other things, by threats to our national security. So the army plans to send her and her feline ilk off fight for our freedom.

The army says cats will make useful additions to their battle regiments.

“For example, dogs can hear five times more acutely than humans, and cats about twice as acutely as dogs. Also, a domestic cat’s sense of smell is about fourteen times as strong as a human’s,” the army said in a press release.

The army has already begun collecting stray cats from Northern Virginia, Alas, some appear to be conscientious objectors and have sent several soldiers to the infirmary with scratches.

Hulu Japan To Stream Movie Before Theatrical Release For 3 Hours Only

Hulu Plus is trying something new to lure new customers in Japan—on February 19 they’ll be streaming an upcoming Japanese movie, Sougen no Isu (A Chair on the Plains), before its theatrical release on February 23.

However, there are a couple of caveats—the movie will only be available for three hours, between the hours of 9pm and midnight, and it will only be available for the first 1,000 customers that click to play.

This is the first time that Hulu Japan has done a promotion like this and, while Hulu has streamed previews of television shows in the United States before they aired on TV, they have never run a promotion to preview movies before the release date in the US.

Streaming previews of movies before they are released is a win-win situation for Hulu, as well as for the studios—it entices viewers to sign up for the Hulu Plus service, as well as helps build a buzz around the upcoming theatrical release.  It will be interesting to see how the experiment works out in Japan and whether or not this is something we’ll start seeing stateside.

GetGlue Set To Take On Web TV, Indexing Hulu Original Content

Social TV app and entertainment network GetGlue is eyeing the original online video content arena and, according to GigaOM’s Janko Roettgers on paidContent.org, has begun working on a partnership with Hulu that will involve promotional elements, as well as the indexing of Hulu’s entire original content library.

GetGlue CEO Alex Iskold told Roettgers, “We are not about linear TV.  We are about what to watch.”  More and more, viewers are discovering “what to watch” outside of the traditional constraints of television.  Streaming original web content has become just as much a part of entertainment, for many of us, as tuning in to our favorite network television shows.

Roettgers writes that, “There is going to be some promotional element that will give GetGlue users the ability to earn a month-long free trial of Hulu Plus, but more interesting is that GetGlue is committed to index all of Hulu’s original content, including shows like Battleground and the Awesomes.”

This announcement comes on the tails of the release of House of Cards—the political drama series starring Kevin Spacey that was developed for Netflix.  All thirteen episodes of the first season were released in one go last week in a move that many saw as a threat to linear TV and a sign as a new stage in the evolution of entertainment.

What, exactly, House of Cards and Netflix’s release strategy means for the future of streaming media and television has yet to be revealed, but it’s certain that original web content is on its way to becoming just as mainstream and desirable to viewers as television programming.  GetGlue seems to be capitalizing on this trend with their partnership with Hulu.

This won’t be the first time that GetGlue and Hulu have partnered up.  Just last month the companies teamed up around Super Bowl XLVII, bringing Hulu AdZone content to GetGlue users and allowing GetGlue users to check-in to Super Bowl commercials.

Today GetGlue also released the latest update to its iPhone app, including a new programming guide, the ability to chat with Facebook friends about shows, and show feeds.
