Twitter’s iOS Update Dumps Video Uploading Services

Version 5.4 of Twitter’s iOS app, released today, has streamlined its its users’ options for video.

Twitter users will no longer be able to upload videos through through Mobypicture, Vodpod and Posterous on their Apple devices.

Telly (formerly Twitvid) confirmed that the service is still included in the Twitter app as a video partner, along with YFrog.

While these and video-sharing services like YouTube and Vimeo will still appear in the Twitter stream, Twitter is nudging its users away from third parties.

Twitter targeted third-party image services in September 2012, cutting support for image uploads from yFrog, Twitpic, Mobypicture, Twitgoo, img.ly and Posterous.

AllThingsD reported in October that Twitter was considering building its own video hosting service in-house.

In January, Twitter unveiled Vine: an app for creating short videos that mimic the look of an animated GIF.

Videos aside, the redesign appears to simplify the experience for mobile users. The new app populates the search results with the most popular tweets, or Top Tweets, rather than the newest; and suggests hashtags and usernames to include when users are composing a tweet to make the process a little easier.

Co-founder Sachin Agarwal instructed users today to remove their data from Posterous “spaces,” or blogs, by April 30. WordPress and Squarespace offer tools to import data from Posterous. Users can also download their data directly from Posterous.

Another co-founder, Garry Tan, has launched a blogging platform that promises never to accept funding or be purchased in order to guarantee that URLs will last “forever.” The service, Posthaven, costs $5 a month.

The Acqui-Hire: Rethinking the Trust We Place in Start-Ups

With more and more companies and products falling prey to acqui-hires, some important questions must be asked: Why purchase a profitable, marketable service just to shut it down? Who holds the responsibility towards the existing users who are left behind? And how does this acquisition pattern affect the relationship between start-ups and potential users?
