Among Teens, Interest in Facebook Falling Significantly

social networks, social media, facebookOver the past year, the share of teens who said Facebook is the most important social media site for them fell 10 percent, according to a study of teen consumer habits by the investment banking firm Piper Jaffray.

Facebook remained the most popular social network among younger users. The number of teens who pointed at Twitter, Reddit and StumbleUpon as  most important grew.

Teens are looking for their own social platform and will continue to show “interest in emerging social platforms from Facebook,” Piper Jaffray concluded.

Survey respondents also wrote in social media platforms including Wanelo, Vine, Snapchat and 4chan.

Some have pointed to Tumblr as a rising star among teens, but a greater portion of its users are less affluent. Piper Jaffray studied teens of upper and average income.

The study also indicated that iOS is the dominant mobile platform among teens, with nearly 60 percent of the 5,200 respondents said their next phone would run Apple’s operating system. Just 20 percent said they planned to buy or have their parents buy an Android device.

Pinterest Dominates the Content Sharing Market on iPhone, Study Finds

Pinterest has the leading mobile app for sharing content, according to a study of iPhone users in the U.S. Mobile insights service Onavo measured the growth in market share for content sharing platforms including Pinterest, StumbleUpon!, Alien Blue, iReddit, 9GAG, and Digg in the second half of 2012.

The analysts found that Pinterest was number one in its category. The image-based network known for beautiful photographs of consumer goods came to the Android, iPad, and iPhone in August 2012. The app grew 33 percent from 7.5 percent of the market share in July to 10.1 percent at the end of December.

“Not only does the 33 percent jump reflect Pinterest’s growing popularity,” wrote the Onavo team, “but it also shows that content sharing platforms have become mainstream with adoption rates on par with Gmail (9.8 percent market share, U.S.) and Groupon (9.75 percent market share, U.S.) and IMDb (9.75 percent market share, U.S.).”

The remaining sites held smaller market shares.

Reddit came in second, but it’s important to note that the popular destination for sharing links, images, and videos has more than one mobile option. iReddit, Conde Nast’s official iPhone app for the platform, shares the market with an unofficial application, Alien Blue, for a combined 3.54 percent of the overall market.

Alien Blue was the more popular of the two, growing from 1.8 percent of U.S. iPhone users in July to 2.4 percent  in December.

That said, iReddit also showed growth at the end of last year, nearly doubling  its market share to 1.14 percent of U.S. iPhone users in December.

Link sharing site StumbleUpon appeared to struggle in the third quarter of 2012, rising to 1.21 percent of U.S. iPhone users in November and dipping slightly in December.

reddit competitor 9GAG, a site for sharing memes, showed a significant amount of growth at 136 percent in the second half of 2012. However, with 0.66 percent of the market share, 9GAG’s app still hasn’t caught up to either of reddit’s.

Despite an overall decline in popularity, Digg came out with a new app at the end of July, prompting a 128 percent jump in market share from 0.2 percent in July to 0.4 percent in December. “Still, if we were doing this report in 2009 it’s likely that Digg would have a far higher market share,” the Onavo team wrote.

Not included in the study were blogging platforms like Twitter and Tumblr, on which people also share links and other media; and Instagram, a Facebook-owned application for sharing personal photos.

StumbleUpon Lays Off 30% of Workforce in Effort to Streamline

social media, social networks, stumbleuponStumbleUpon today laid off 35 of its staffers, reducing its total headcount by more than 30 percent, the company said.

The move came as part of a larger effort to “become more streamlined [and] focused,” according to spokesman Mike Mayzel.

The San Francisco-based Web 2.0 superstar was hit hard by the rise of Facebook. Its referrals, already a shadow of what they once were, fell by more than half in 2012, as Pinterest grew in influence.

In late 2012, StumbleUpon debuted a redesign that many said emulated its latest competitor.

Still, the company says it has more tricks up its sleeve.

“As a result of these changes, the company will be profitable and will operate more quickly and efficiently and experiment more aggressively,” Mayzel said in an email.

StumbleUpon Gets All Dressed Up for Windows 8

StumbleUpon has created a discovery app that’s compatible with the new Windows 8 tablets and PCs, the company announced today. Much like the newly revamped website, this version is designed to be better-looking and more social.  (We’re not sure if it’s single, but we can ask if you’d like.)

StumbleUpon appears in the live tiles on the front page of Windows 8 for instant access to the recommended content. Inside the app, there’s a full-screen view that hides the commands for easier browsing and a multi-tasking function called “Snap View” that lets users Stumble alongside another open application.

As for social features, the new StumbleUpon makes use of the Charm bar, the universal toolbar of Windows 8, where users can share their Stumbles and Likes with other Share-enabled Windows 8 apps. Just like the desktop version, users can also follow their friends’ interests and other trending topics.

“The dynamic, visually-rich interface and interaction model of the Windows 8 operating system are a natural fit with StumbleUpon, which aims to bring surprise and fun to the experience of finding great stuff on the web,”  said Cody Simms, VP of product at StumbleUpon. “Microsoft Corp. has created an environment that enables the user to enjoy all of the amazing content that the Web has to offer and we are excited to be a part of this.”

iPad MiniNew iPad Mini Means More Screens in Front of TVs (Lost Remote)
To date, 100 million iPads have been sold in just over two years, accounting for 91 percent of all tablet Web traffic, according to Apple CEO Tim Cook in his presentation on Tuesday. And now Apple has taken the wraps off a 7.9-inch iPad Mini and a new slate of fourth generation iPads, which means more screens in more places. USA Today The iPad Mini will be priced at $329, and the new screen has resolution of 1024 x 768. But it doesn’t sport the sterling retina display that’s on the latest generations of its larger sibling. AP Customers can begin ordering the new model on Friday. Apple’s late founder Steve Jobs once ridiculed a small tablet from a competitor as a “tweener” that was too big and too small to compete with either smartphones or tablets. AllThingsD Before revealing its much-anticipated tablet, the company showed off a 13-inch Macbook Pro with a Retina display, refreshed Mac mini and next-generation iMac. The new iMac is the thinnest desktop computer Apple has made to date, measuring just 5 mm at the edges — 80 percent thinner than the previous model, if you’re counting. Macworld Cook presented the updated iBooks Author as part of an “iPad in education” segment during the introduction of the latest versions of Apple’s tablet. Brazilian Judge Orders Arrest of Google Executive Over YouTube Videos (The Daily Dot)
A judge in Brazil has ordered the arrest of a Google executive after the company refused to remove two YouTube videos last week allegedly slandering a mayoral candidate in the city of Campo Grande. Judge Flavio Peren placed the order on Fabio Jose Silva Coehlo, Google’s president of operations in Brazil. AP The videos on YouTube make incendiary comments about an alleged paternity suit aimed at Alcides Bernal, who is running for mayor of the city of Campo Grande. Google said in a Tuesday statement that it rejected the decision by Peren, which included an order for a statewide, 24-hour suspension of Google and YouTube. The Financial Times The order, which Google is appealing, is the second time this month that an electoral court in Brazil has tried to arrest a top executive at the company for failing to delete YouTube videos attacking a mayoral candidate. While Google frequently faces challenges worldwide over videos or images uploaded to its websites, especially in the Middle East, Brazil is among the top sources of requests for content removal. Reuters In the second half of last year, Google removed four Orkut social network profiles after an electoral court order, the company said on a portion of its website called the Transparency Report. The Verge The controversy over these ads echoes that over the trailer for “Innocence of Muslims,” an anti-Islam piece that has sparked protests worldwide. If popular outcry exists in this case, it’s much more muted, and the video below has gotten only about 8,000 views since late August. continued…
