More Teens Are on Tumblr than Facebook or Instagram, Survey Finds

Facebook is starting to show its age, according to a recent survey of younger social media users. The shocker? Tumblr was the most popular network, beating out not only Facebook, but also its newly acquired image-sharing site, Instagram.

Posterous co-founder Gary Tan surveyed two groups of young people ages 13 to 18 and 19 to 25 to find out which social networks they preferred.

Out of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, and Snapchat, it was Tumblr, the blogging site best known for single-subject blogs and animated GIFs, that dominated the space with 61 percent of teenagers and 57 percent of young adults.

Facebook, by comparison, drew in 55 percent of the 13-to-18-year-old and 52 percent of the 19-to-25-year-old audiences. Twitter was also down to 22 percent of teens and 17 percent of young adults.

But Instagram, which is known for being the cooler site and a leader among other image-sharing services, is even lower on the hierarchy of this survey, with only 21 percent of teens and 11 percent of young adults.

The photo-messaging app Snapchat, which is the newest of the group, is joining the ranks of its more established predecessors with 13 percent of teenagers and 4 percent of young adults.

According to the survey, younger teenagers showed more interest in social media sites than young adults across the board.

Tan, now 31 years old, took the news pretty hard. “To be honest, it’s a sobering notion that there’s some piece of technology out there that you and your peer group doesn’t use and doesn’t understand,” he wrote. “As far as I can tell, it might be a first for me and my geezer friends.”

The Demographic Social Tidal Wave About to Swamp Your Business

Many of the changes of the digital era came because older folks ("digital immigrants" like me) adopted new behaviors, but most of the inertia for business evolution occurred when a wave of "digital natives" came of age. What will happen when the current batch of young "social natives" reach their adult years? A lot, and this will require businesses do far more than just add to the IT stack and hire a couple community managers.
