These days, your Facebook Timeline can serve as a digital scrapbook of your life: birthdays, graduations, weddings, trips to Disneyland and, yes, the time you got a puppy. A new service wants to help Facebook users move those memories from the cloud into a permanent, physical keepsake.

Likebooks will convert content from your Facebook Timeline and print it in a physical book, as shown in the video above. Your status updates, photos and comments from friends can be printed in your custom book. Content is either pulled from a specific date range or an entire year (as far back as 2007)

Depending on how much content you choose to archive, a Likebook can cost from $12 to $137 and can range from 25 to 500 pages. They even come in soft or hardcover. Read more...

Facebook Introduces Verified Pages and Profiles

File under “can’t believe it didn’t happen sooner“: Facebook launched verified pages and profiles for public figures today.

“Verified Pages belong to a small group of prominent public figures (celebrities, journalists, government officials, popular brands and businesses) with large audiences,” Facebook said.

Some Pages are already verified. User profiles will see the feature soon, the company said.

Facebook will adopt a small blue icon with a check mark inside it, similar to the one pioneered by Twitter, to designate Verified Pages. The icon will appear beside the account holder’s name on timelines and in search results, as well as on his or her Page or Timeline.

Like Twitter, Facebook will decide whose accounts are worthy of verification. Users cannot request to have their account verified, the company said.

According to Inside Facebook, Facebook is likely “preparing for another push to get celebrities on the platform by expanding its strategic partner development team to build relationships with athletes, musicians and other entertainers.”

GoogleGoogle Reportedly to Launch Music Streaming at I/O Conference Today (SocialTimes)
Google will launch music streaming through YouTube and Google Play, according to reports in The Verge and the Wall Street Journal. The company, which has struggled to keep up with Apple in terms of media offerings, has reportedly signed licensing deals with Universal Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment, the reports said. The Verge Earlier this year, Fortune magazine reported that Google had already struck similar licensing agreements with Warner Music Group, the smallest of the top three record labels. But landing Universal Music and Sony gives Google access to the two largest record companies, home to such acts as Bob Dylan, Alicia Keys, Lil Wayne, Rihanna and Jay-Z. The Wall Street Journal Google already has an existing music service, which it launched in 2011 and is part of its Google Play digital media store for devices powered by its Android operating system. That service only lets people buy individual songs or albums, while the new one from Google’s Android unit offers a paid subscription model to access whole libraries of songs. TechCrunch The Google streaming service has been in development for a while now, according to rumors, but negotiations have now progressed to the point where it’s ready to launch, with all three major record labels signed up. There won’t be a free option, says The New York Times, but instead there will be a paid subscription available at or around the going rate at competing services, or roughly $10 per month. The New York Times By expanding to streaming music, Google will be tapping into the most rapid growth area in digital music. Spotify, which was founded in Sweden in 2008 and came to the United States almost two years ago, now has more than 24 million regular users, six million of whom pay about $5 to $10 a month for premium service. Pandora now has more than 200 million users, the vast majority of whom use it free.

Pinterest Adds Mentions, Notifications to Mobile (Mashable)
Pinterest released on Tuesday updates to its iOS and Android apps, including new mobile features such as search suggestions, push notifications and the ability to mention friends in posts. The updates may seem small but represent the company’s larger efforts to move beyond its Web-based presence and make it easier for people to use the platform on smartphones and tablets. The Next Web The new search functionality is arguably the most useful. Simply hit the magnifying glass icon in the bottom toolbar, and enter a query in the text box at the top of the screen. Pinterest will automatically suggest relevant results based on what the user is typing; it’s a small addition, but one that significantly ramps up the speed at which users can navigate the app and discover new content. CNET People using the iOS app can also now pin from an external website inside the app. Altogether, the updates help make the inspirational social network a mobile-friendly place where people can do more than just browse through pins.

Google NoseGoogle, YouTube, Twitter Get into April Fools’ Action (USA Today)
Tired of all those vowels clogging up your tweets? Twitter announced a solution late Sunday night, saying it will shift to a two-tiered service, dubbing its basic, consonant-only plan “Twttr.” The April Fools’ Day joke kicked off with Twitter tweeting out, “Trd th nw Twttr yt? Mr tm fr mr twts! The New York Times YouTube’s central prank is a video. It reveals YouTube’s entire existence has been a contest to find the best video ever and that YouTube will shut down — the submission deadline will be over — and the winner will be announced. AP Google, having already debuted its wearable Google Glass, on Monday also showcased Google Nose to add scents to it search results. It urged visitors to lean in close and take a deep whiff for search results such as “unattended litter box.” SocialTimes It’s no secret that the Internet loves cats. Judge Not Impressed with Facebook’s Argument in ‘Timeline’ Lawsuit (AllFacebook)
Facebook is battling a lawsuit from Timelines.com., and U.S. district judge John W. Darrah ruled recently that Facebook has not demonstrated that “timeline” is a generic enough term to own exclusively. Darrah wrote in a ruling Monday that Facebook hasn’t been able to prove that: “At this stage in the proceedings, it is not unreasonable to conclude that as to this group of users, ‘timeline(s)’ has acquired a specific meaning associated with plaintiff.” CNET The social network, which was first sued in September 2011 by Chicago company Timelines Inc. for infringement, now faces a jury trial, scheduled for April 22, over the mark. The company, which has 1,000 active users, is seeking damages equivalent to advertising revenue generated from Facebook’s Timeline, Timelines attorney Douglas Albritton told Bloomberg. Bloomberg Andrew Noyes, a spokesman for Facebook, said in an email that the company declined to comment on Darrah’s decision. “We’re happy with the ruling,” Albritton said in a phone interview.

Social Media Newsfeed: Facebook News Feed Ads | Hashtags Harmful?

Facebook ExchangeFacebook Exchange Ads Being Tested on Desktop News Feeds (AllFacebook)
The lines between different ways to advertise on Facebook are beginning to blur, as the social network Tuesday announced what it called a “small alpha test” of running ads delivered by its Facebook Exchange real-time-bidding ad-purchase platform on the desktop version of its News Feed, while at the same time assuring users that the number of ads in their News Feeds would not increase. Facebook added that it would expand availability of this new ad format in the coming weeks. CNET “We wanted to give advertisers and agencies the opportunity to deliver highly relevant ads in News Feed, the most engaging place on the Web,” the company wrote in a blog post. “We also believe that ads delivered through FBX will create more relevant ads for people.” Reuters It ties together two of the most significant innovations that Facebook has made in the past year to its advertising business, which accounts for roughly 84 percent of the company’s revenue. Marketers last year welcomed the launch of Facebook Exchange as it provided a common online advertising technique long missing on the social network. Adweek For now, the FBX News Feed ads are limited to Page Post link ads. Those units would allow, for example, a clothing retailer to promote a specific dress to someone who had recently checked out the item on the retailer’s site and include a thumbnail image of the garment plus a brief description with a link back to the product’s landing page on the retailer’s e-commerce site. Inside Facebook The company is working with a small group of demand side platforms (DSPs) including TellApart, MediaMath and Nanigans. It has also said it will begin making the ads available for more DSPs and advertisers in the coming weeks.

Hashtags Considered #Harmful (Nieman Journalism Lab)
New York Times social media editor Daniel Victor says hashtags don’t attract an audience and “are aesthetically damaging.” There are many useful exceptions, but hashtags for big news stories are particularly vulnerable to mathematical futility. The Next Web Speaking of hashtags, Path has followed in the footsteps of Twitter and Flickr (and possibly Facebook?) with the addition of support for hashtags to its iOS app. The new feature links hashtagged comments to a search across moments, aka posts, but the resulting search will pull non-hashtagged posts as well.

ZyngaZynga Will No Longer Require Login with Facebook (AllFacebook)
Game developer Zynga and Facebook, once virtually intertwined, continue to drift further apart from each other, as Zynga announced in a post on its blog that while login with Facebook will still be an option for game players, it will no longer be a requirement starting next week. In February 2012, Facebook’s S-1 filing revealed that Zynga accounted for 12 percent of Facebook’s revenue, but the two companies have been drifting apart. CNET Starting next week, gamers who want to play the games at Zynga.com won’t need a Facebook account to do so. Zynga is trying to set itself apart from Facebook, but it knows it can’t cut its former partner out of the picture entirely. VentureBeat “People want to communicate with just game friends,” said Tim Catlin, general manager of Zynga.com and developer experience. “Players have wanted to have a choice about playing under a pseudonym. With a separate Zynga.com account, a player can now make up his or her own gamer name. Players can now control the way they interact with other players.” The Wall Street Journal Among the updates, Zynga will now use its own currency on Zynga.com, instead of routing payments through Facebook, which collects a 30 percent fee from transactions. Facebook also plans to restrict the game maker’s access to users’ Facebook friends lists. TechCrunch It’s no secret that Zynga is rethinking its approach to gaming at the moment. The company has shut down a number of once-popular titles and is releasing fewer games and spacing their releases further apart.

The latest version of the app is available now in the iOS App Store and the Google Play Store, and the My Verizon website should show the web app when users log in.

Google ReaderGoogle Will Shut Down RSS Feed Reader (SocialTimes)
Google will shut off Reader, its RSS feed aggregator, in July, the company said on Wednesday. The company cited declining usage as a rationale for shuttering the service, even while it acknowledged that Reader has a “loyal following.” CNET Google Reader lets users subscribe to and read feeds from all manner of publishers, in a format that resembles an email inbox. Loved by information junkies, the nearly eight-year-old service was once among the most popular ways of tracking large numbers of news sites, blogs and other publishers. VentureBeat Reader will officially close down on July 1 and without many other options out there, it leaves us wondering what will happen to RSS overall. In addition to Reader, Google is also shutting down its Google Voice app for Blackberry. Business Insider Google Reader is used ferociously by people in the media and technology insiders, who depend on them to keep track of a large number of news sources. So they’re very upset, judging by the stunned reaction on Twitter using #savegooglereader. Mashable Google says it is shuttering Reader and deprecating or shutting down a number of other services as part of the company’s “spring cleaning” initiative — one that seeks to help the company focus on the features the need the most use. In addition to Google Reader, the company is also ceasing sales and updates for the Snapseed Desktop apps for Mac and Windows and shutting down its CalDAV API.

The Next Web Included in this update are redesigned sections that now allow you to have one place to add music, movies, TV shows and books that are of interest to that user. Additionally, starting Wednesday, the social network gave users a cleaner Timeline layout, with posts on the right side of the timeline and photos, music, and other recent activity on the left. AllThingsD Facebook really wants developers to build apps into its platform.
