Nokia Unveils New Lumia Windows Phone (USA Today)
Nokia on Wednesday introduced a new smartphone that will serve as the flagship handset in its alliance with Microsoft. The 920 model, which will have a 4.5-inch screen, 32 gigabytes of storage and run on the next version of Microsoft’s mobile operating system, Windows Phone 8, is aimed at a more discriminating customer base that values a high-end camera and a larger, clear display. The New York Times/Bits Blog Nokia also briefly introduced the Lumia 820, a mid-priced smartphone with exchangeable covers. The companies did not disclose prices or release dates for either of the phones, but said they would arrive in some markets in the the last three months of this year. Reuters Nokia shares plummeted 13 percent after its new Lumia smartphones failed to impress investors looking for transformational handsets to rescue the struggling Finnish company. The Lumia was the first in a flurry of planned mobile-device launches expected ahead of the holiday shopping season. AP Nokia sold 4 million Lumia phones in the second quarter, a far cry from the 26 million iPhones that Apple sold during those three months. So far, the line hasn’t helped Nokia halt its sales decline. The Wall Street Journal Competitors hoping to catch up with Apple not only have to come up with great technology, they have precious little time to do it. Apple set a high technical bar for mobile phones with the introduction of the iPhone in 2007. continued…

Mark Zuckerberg: I Won’t Sell Facebook Shares for a Year (Mashable)
Some investors and Facebook insiders may be rushing to sell off their stock in the company, but at least one person plans to hold onto his shares for a while: Facebook CEO and co-founder Mark Zuckerberg. Facebook revealed in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Tuesday that Zuckerberg has “no intention” to sell any of his Facebook shares for at least the next year. VentureBeat According to the document, Zuckerberg holds roughly 444 million shares of Class B common stock and an additional 60 million Class B shares issuable upon the exercise of an option. All of those shares are staying put for the foreseeable future. Bloomberg Facebook shortened the lockup period for certain employees, so 234 million shares will now be available for sale on Oct. 29, instead of Nov. 14. After Tuesday’s amendment, and accounting for the shares that Zuckerberg won’t sell, the total number freed up for sale by insiders through November will shrink to 1.01 billion from 1.44 billion previously, according to the filing. AllFacebook The bad news related to Facebook stock continues to roll in, with analysts for two of the social network’s largest underwriters, Morgan Stanley and J.P. Morgan, lowering their price targets, according to reports. The Wall Street Journal reported that Morgan Stanley Analyst Scott Devitt dropped his price target for Facebook for the next 12 months from $38 per share to $32, warning that it could drop to as low as $17 per share. CNNMoney Zuckerberg will take the stage at this month’s TechCrunch Disrupt conference to make his first public appearance since the company’s tumultuous debut in May. Republican Convention Sets Social Media Bar for Democrats (Mashable)
The social media numbers for the Republican National Convention are in: more than 4 million tweets with a peak of 14,743 tweets per minute, 2.5 million-plus YouTube views and 300,000 hours of streaming video viewed in a three-day period with an average view time of more than 30 minutes. Given how ubiquitous social media has become since the last election in 2008, it’s not surprising that this year’s conventions are doing well online — but these numbers certainly set a high bar for the Democratic National Convention, beginning Tuesday in Charlotte, N.C. AP TV viewership for the Republican convention dropped sharply from 2008, suggesting interest in this presidential race falls short of some past contests. But the convention was a hit online and on social networks, the latest evidence of the political conversation’s gradual migration from traditional media to the Web. WSOC TV Visitors to the Democratic convention are starting to use a grassroots Twitter movement to get answers about the Queen City. Locals set up the hashtag #cltfaq to help people from out of town. National Journal The emergence of Twitter as a kind of first draft of campaign journalism appears to be the signal digital change for both political parties and candidates in 2012, according to a panel of social media experts assembled by National Journal and The Atlantic at the Democratic convention. “It’s a 140-character news cycle,” said Adam Sharp, who is in charge of government, news and social innovation at Twitter. The Daily Dot Of course, in the age of social media, there are plenty of places to get your political fix online. Here’s a rundown of where you should look to stay up-to-date on the Democratic National Convention happenings: YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr and Instagram. continued…
