Man Animates Wife’s Drunken Story About Tortilla Chips

Tortillachip
Feed-twFeed-fb

If there's ever been a PSA for not drinking and joking, it's this video

Adam Patch's wife got a little too tipsy one night and turned, like most do, into a stand-up comedian. Her subject of choice? Tortilla-chip bullying. (No, folks, even we can't make this stuff up.)

Patch recorded his wife's nonsensical, pun-filled story and turned it into a darkly hilarious animated video that really shines a light on the chip-on-chip abuse

No news yet if Patch's wife is regretting her drunken ramblings, or if Patch has been exiled to nights on the couch for turning her joke into viral Internet gold Read more...

6 Places Video Creators Can Find Royalty-Free Music

A great soundtrack can take your video project to the next level. Finding inspiration is easy; the hard part is finding music that’s affordable and doesn’t violate any copyright laws.

Luckily, video-sharing sites like YouTube and Vimeo have started building their own music libraries for creators to borrow from if they can’t rely on talented friends, and there are plenty of songwriters online who are willing to share their tracks as well.

Many of the songs on these sites are completely free to use for your project, with no royalties or licensing fees. For the tracks that aren’t free, you’ll pay a one-time licensing fee to download the music and you’ll be supporting an artist.

Here are a few of our favorites:

ccMixter

If you have some editing skills, this collection of samples, remixes, and a cappella tracks is great for incorporating into your own music to use in your video. Beastie Boys, DJ Vadim, and other well-known artists have tracks on here that are legal and free to sample under a Creative Commons license.

Final Cut Pro X

The editing software itself is pricey, but it comes with 1,300 royalty-free sound effects that you can download through a free software update. They can be accessed through the built-in Music and Sound Browser.

Incompetech

Our own web video team recommends composer Kevin MacLeod, who has a treasure chest of tracks in styles ranging from “Disco and Lounge” to “Elegant Piano” that he allows other people to use for free under a Creative Commons license. (Ask him for a quote if you want to commission something original.) The site also has instructions on how to get a Sans Attribution license for television or radio, and how to properly attribute the pieces on YouTube so the videos won’t be taken down.

SoundCloud

This socially savvy network has a special section just for tracks that were uploaded under a Creative Commons license. This means you’re free to use them as long as you follow the guidelines established by the artist. This is a good place to find tracks that don’t sound like background music. Just like ccMixter, SoundCloud has a few artists like Snoop Lion that will lay down a beat and invite other musicians to make a remix.

YouTube Video Editor

Inside the YouTube video editor, you’ll find a library of pre-approved tracks that you can use in your video free of charge. You won’t recognize most of the songs (although there is a cover of “Bridge Over Troubled Water” in there somewhere), but there are many styles to choose from to suit your mood.

Vimeo Music Store

Vimeo also has a catalog of songs for video creators to use. Some of them are free, while others start at $1.99 per download. As on YouTube, the selection here is outstanding.

Top 5 Cat-Themed April Fool’s Pranks

Catpy April Mewls Day! It’s no secret that the Internet loves cats. Some of today’s cleverest pranks involve the furry creatures. Here’s a rundown of a few we thought were the cat’s meow.

5. Vimeo Becomes Vimeow: You’ve got to put those cat videos somewhere, and Vimeo[w] wants to be your host.

4. Hulu is promoting some fake shows from real shows in its carousel today, including Itchy & Scratchy, the cartoon the characters of “The Simpsons” watch.

3. Oberlin becomes Meowberlin: It’s a big edgier for an institution of higher learning to go for a Catpril Fools joke, but Oberlin has pulled it off with aplumb. For users clicking to get more information about the kitteh image featured on the homepage, Oberlin has provided link to a local animal rescue organization, tugging at our bleeding heartstrings.

2. Mobile design optimized for cats: We like this joke because it’s not entirely fake. There is a YouTube channel for cats, and just a couple of weeks ago Friskies hosted a hackathon for mobile apps for cats.

“YouTube has recently been dominated by cats. Even the simplest video of a cat using an iPad app easily gathers millions of viewers. Bowing to this takeover, our clients are increasingly asking us, “How can we improve our site or app for cats?” With their lack of opposable thumbs and ever-shifting focus, cats are certainly a challenging target audience,” said the Nielsen Norman Group.

Early research has found that “Rapid double and triple taps are common among felines, especially kittens.”

1. The army has a sense of humor, but Grumpy Cat is annoyed. She’s annoyed, among other things, by threats to our national security. So the army plans to send her and her feline ilk off fight for our freedom.

The army says cats will make useful additions to their battle regiments.

“For example, dogs can hear five times more acutely than humans, and cats about twice as acutely as dogs. Also, a domestic cat’s sense of smell is about fourteen times as strong as a human’s,” the army said in a press release.

The army has already begun collecting stray cats from Northern Virginia, Alas, some appear to be conscientious objectors and have sent several soldiers to the infirmary with scratches.

Vimeo PRO Creators Can Now Sell On Demand Content, Retain 90% Of Profits

Last fall, Vimeo began launching features to help creators make more money.  It started with the launch of the Tip Jar in September, which allows viewers to send money, or “tip”, creators as a thank you for the entertainment they provide.  In November, Vimeo announced a new pay-to-view movie experience, and today they’ve launched Vimeo On Demand—a new platform that lets creators sell their work directly to their audiences.

Available to all Vimeo PRO members, “Vimeo On Demand empowers creators to sell their works directly to their audiences and retain 90 percent share of the revenue after transaction costs,” according to a press released.  “In addition to its creator-friendly revenue share, Vimeo On Demand gives creators the flexibility and control to choose their price; select country-by-country availability; customize their page design; and offer content on Vimeo, their own website, or both.”

PRO creators can also select how long their content is available after purchase and whether they’d like to allow purchasers to download their content, as well as to set up a custom URL for their content on Vimeo.

Vimeo on Demand viewers can watch anywhere—online on their computers, on mobile devices (Android, iOS, Windows), tablets, connected TVs (Apple TV/Roku/Google TV/Xbox Live), and Smart TVs (Samsung/Panasonic/Phillips) all in HD quality.

Vimeo CEO Kerry Trainor says, “Vimeo is committed to empowering creators with tools to display and distribute their work in beautiful HD quality.  With the addition of Vimeo On Demand, creators can now use Vimeo to control the way they earn revenue and retain a significant portion of the proceeds.”

Instagram for Video? Vimeo Adds Visual Enhancer With Over 500 ‘Looks’

This morning Vimeo has announced that they’ve partnered with cloud-based video enhancing platform Vivoom to add a collection of new visual enhancements to their service called “Looks.”  Users can now apply high quality, stylistic visual effects, much like Instagram filters, to videos, in addition to the already launched ability to add licensed music to their creations.

Vimeo CEO, Kerry Trainor, says, “By adding Looks, Vimeo continues to provide the tools that help people easily make better movies.  Nearly every minute you see on TV or in movies has been visually enhanced.  Everyone wants the same quality as the pros, but it’s out of reach for most people.  Our aim is to make these types of high quality visual effects easy and accessible to everyone.”

The new ‘Looks’ enhancement feature has launched on Vimeo’s web service at vimeo.com/enhancer.  While logged into your Vimeo account you can easily enhance any of your previously uploaded videos.  Just click on one of the ‘Looks’ and you’ll be invited to “select one of your videos to enhance.”  Much like YouTube’s Video Enhancements, Vimeo shows you a split screen of your original video and what it looks like after the effect (or “Look”) has been added.  Vimeo gives users a bit more control with a slider that lets you adjust the intensity of the enhancement.  Once you’re happy with your look, just click ‘Enhance.’

Speaking of YouTube’s video enhancements, the online video giant offers about 18 different enhancements, or filters, to choose from (you can find them by going to Video Manager > Edit > Enhancements.  By comparison, Vimeo has added over 500 Looks.

According to a press release, “Vimeo will provide Looks to its registered users for free for the next 90 days.”  Following the 90 day period, it looks like most Looks will be available for $0.99.

Vivoom CEO Katherine Hays says, “Vimeo understands that making video look better is a really complex problem.  Users need an easy way to not only significantly improve the visual quality of their video but also add their individual style.  This partnership allows everyone to do that for the first time.”

Social Media, Take Note of the Echograph Acquisition

Vimeo, the YouTube alternative that has carved a niche in high resolution videos, acquired Echograph, an IOS app that allows users to create and share tiny animated photos or “echographs.” You can think of an echograph as a photo in motion, or as a short muted video that loops infinitely without any play or stop buttons.

Vimeo Takes on Twitter with GIF-like Video Maker, Echograph

Vimeo will have a new app for making videos that look like animated GIFs. The company today announced the acquisition of Echograph from Clear-Media for an undisclosed sum.

Much like Twitter’s Vine, Echograph plays short video clips on a loop.

“We chose Echograph because it helps people easily create beautiful high quality video content,” said Vimeo CEO Kerry Trainor in a statement.

The application was an Editor’s Choice in the App Store in more than 130 countries.

Formerly sold for $2.99 in the iTunes App Store, Echograph will now be free to download for iPhone and iPad.

While the Echograph team will join Vimeo following the sale, the team will remain a separate brand and stay at its headquarters in Los Angeles. Clear-Media CEO Nick Alt will become Vimeo’s vice president of mobile.

Inside Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg said revenue from local businesses was strong in the fourth quarter of 2012, with the number of local businesses paying for advertising on Facebook doubling since the beginning of 2012. Sandberg says this is in large part because of Promoted Posts, which make it easy for businesses to buy ads directly from their pages instead of the more complicated ad dashboard. The New York Times Facebook reported fourth-quarter revenues of $1.59 billion, representing 40 percent growth. Analysts were looking for a 34 percent growth in revenue, to $1.52 billion in this quarter, according to analysts surveyed by Bloomberg.
