The Verge CNN’s app will give The New York Times some competition in the news arena with video clips and the latest headlines. Elle is the first magazine trying to bring its content to Glass with an app that can read stories aloud, and you can view photos that accompany each piece. When it comes to Evernote, you’ll be able to send text-based notes from the company’s web client to Glass for reference later on. The Huffington Post The futuristic-looking devices have been a common sight at the Google conference this week, with many of the attendees and staffers wearing Glass. Digitally Engaged Moms Can Be Your Best Customers, if You’re Smart About it [Infographic] (AllTwitter)
Take it from me, digitally engaged moms are the best untapped resource around. If you’re an everyday product/service – you know, like food or underwear (neither of which I think millennials use) – showing a little attention to your digitally engaged moms can be your social sharing golden ticket.

Groupon Stock Jumps 15% After Beating Revenue Estimates

Groupon
Feed-twFeed-fb

Groupon may not be out of the woods yet, but it did have a better-than-expected March quarter.

The daily deals company reported earnings-per-share of $0.03 on revenue of $601 million for the quarter, matching Wall Street's consensus estimate for earnings and beating its estimate of $589 million in revenue. That's the first Groupon has come in ahead of Wall Street's revenue projections since the first quarter of 2012

Most of that revenue growth came from North America, where sales increased by 42% year-over-year. However, Groupon is still handicapped by its international operations, where sales decreased by 18% year-over-year. Read more...

Groupon Will Be More Focused on Local Businesses, Lefkofsky Promises

groupon, daily deals, mobile apps

In his first call as acting co-CEO, Eric Lefkofsky promised the company would be more focused, emphasizing its ability to deliver local business deals in a variety of markets.

“At times as an organization, we’ve spread ourselves too thin,” he said, reflecting on Groupon’s initial horizontal expansion beyond daily deals.

Groupon reported consolidated revenue of $601 million in the first quarter of 2013, up 7 percent over the first quarter of last year.

Although it reported a net loss of $3.2 million, it shrunk its solvency gap 10 percent in a year-over-year comparison, and managed to deliver an adjusted earnings per share of $0.03 after a loss last quarter.

The company’s share price rose slightly after hours.

Lefkofsky pointed to the company’s renewed focus to account for its quarterly improvement.

“By Q4, the overall mix [of offerings] shifted toward newer categories. In 2013, they rebalanced as local billings rose. We are a local company; at our core,” he said.

The focus on local business sales makes sense given that local and travel billings rose over the quarter, while goods billings fell far enough to hand the company an overall setback.

In North America, 45 percent of March transactions came from mobile devices. Mobile customers on average buy more than 50 percent more, the company said.

Executives declined to give more information about the search for a permanent CEO, but said that a search committee had been formed.

VP Departure Offers More Evidence That Groupon Is Dumping Goods

groupon, staples, amazon, e-commerce, groupon goods, daily dealsAfter just a year as the head of Groupon’s Goods division, Faisal Masud is leaving the company to lead global e-commerce at office supply retailer Staples.

Kal Raman, Groupon’s COO, will manage the role for the time being, a spokesperson told SocialTimes.

Masud’s departure adds to subtle signals coming out of Groupon on the wake of founder and CEO Andrew Mason’s March departure. Under Mason, the company seemed to be investing in Goods, a discounted electronics platform, as a means of recovering from the failure of the daily deals model that first defined the company. Goods accounted for $2 billion of the company’s $5.4 billion in revenue in 2012.

The e-commerce-focused executive role Masud will occupy is a new one for Staples.

Update 5/8/13: A Groupon spokesman responded to our post, calling it “hogwash”: “The departure of Faisal Masud from Groupon Goods does not indicate ‘That Groupon is Dumping Goods.’  … After a successful 4th quarter in 2012 Groupon Goods is on a $2 billion run rate.  This is after only 5 quarters since it’s inception in 2011.”

Groupon Pushes Into Local Search With Updated Mobile Apps

groupon, local search, yelp, foursquare, google, mobile appsGroupon today launched updates to its iOS and Android mobile apps that put local search front and center.

“Search is a critical part of Groupon’s product strategy. Most Groupon merchants now make their deals available on an ongoing basis, and search allows customers to find only the deals most relevant to them in this expanded marketplace,” the company said in a press release.

The updated apps include a magnifying glass icon that allows customers to search from anywhere in the app. The Android update also offers a layout optimized for 10-inch tablets.

Unlike most digital properties, Groupon brings in more traffic from mobile devices than from desktop Web interfaces, according to comScore.

The company’s emphasis on local search suggests that in the wake of Andrew Mason’s ouster as CEO, it may be shifting focus. Under Mason, the company had worked to improve its Goods business, which sells products at discount prices.

The local search space is growing increasingly crowded as Foursquare also horns in on Yelp and Google.

Topping the list of the biggest properties across devices were Google, Yahoo, Microsoft, Facebook and Amazon. Microsoft drew fewer visits from mobile users than its competitors.

Groupon in No Rush to Replace Mason, CFO Says

deals, daily deals, ecommerce, groupon, social commerceGroupon feels no urgency to replace founder and fired CEO Andrew Mason and will continue to execute the business plans put in place before his departure, chief financial officer Jason Child said at an investor meeting hosted by Deutschebank.

“We’re in really good position to not miss a beat as we execute against the plan for 2013. In the meantime we’ll be looking for the right long-term replacement [for Mason], but we’ll take our time to find the right fit,” Child said.

Child said the company will improve performance by streamlining the way it sells and publishes deals in Europe and by encouraging merchants to run deals for six months to a year, rather than the “one and done” deals that first put Groupon on the map.

Groupon, unlike companies that rely on advertising revenue, could benefit as more users access its marketplace through mobile devices.

“Engagement of mobile users is at least 50 percent better than Web-only consumers,” Child said.

In the United States, 40 percent of Groupon’s visits come from mobile, he said.

Fired Groupon CEO Pens Colorful Farewell Note

Following Groupon’s most recent earnings report, the company’s CEO announced that he was fired. Andrew MasonGroupon to Replace CEO Andrew Mason (SocialTimes)
Andrew Mason will no longer be the chief executive of Groupon, the company announced on Thursday. Stock in the daily deals business had fallen more than 20 percent after the company’s fourth-quarter earnings failed to meet analysts’ expectations, according to The Wall Street Journal. The Wall Street Journal Co-founder Eric Lefkofsky will join Ted Leonsis, vice chairman of the company, and serve as co-CEOs on an interim basis. Mason was already in the hot seat late last year when reports emerged that the company explored the possibility of replacing him as CEO, but ultimately decided to keep him on board. It looks like Mason wasn’t satisfying Groupon’s needs, even while on a short leash. The New York Times/Dealbook Here’s an excerpt from a letter Mason sent to company employees on Thursday, which he posted online “since it will leak anyway”: “After four and a half intense and wonderful years as C.E.O. of Groupon, I’ve decided that I’d like to spend more time with my family. Just kidding – I was fired today.” CNN Mason will take home a severance package of $378.36. He was making only $756.72 per year. NPR Mason, well-known for his open and joking personality, later compared his tenure at the company to a charmed session of playing the video game Battletoads. And he asked for suggestions for “a good fat camp to lose my Groupon 40″ — a request he later said had met with sufficient responses, via his Twitter feed.

Facebook Officially Announces Acquisition of Atlas Solutions from Microsoft (AllFacebook)
Ending weeks of speculation, Facebook Thursday confirmed its acquisition of the Atlas Solutions ad-serving business from Microsoft. AdAge initially reported the deal earlier this month, and talk heated up again Wednesday, with AdAge reporting — correctly, as it turns out — that the deal would be announced Thursday. CNET Terms of the deal were not disclosed. The companies also didn’t disclose the number of employees the deal affects, but Facebook noted that Atlas’ employees will remain in Seattle. Forbes The way Facebook is describing the potential benefits makes it quite clear that it hopes Atlas, which is used by advertisers and agencies to place ads on websites and measure their impact, will help it prove Facebook ads do in fact work – a point I made in December when rumors started heating up. Facebook has spent much of the past year or so on many initiatives with measurement firms such as Nielsen and comScore and issued dozens of case studies trying to show just that.

The Vatican Deleted All of Pope Benedict XVI’s Tweets (VentureBeat)
In a strange social media move, the Vatican has deleted all of the tweets sent from Pope Benedict XVI’s @Pontifex account to make way for a new pope. Benedict XVI was the first pope to use Twitter to communicate with his flock (though, of course, he’s the only one to hold the pontiff position since Twitter’s founding), and he urged Catholics to use Twitter to spread the “Good News.”

Taking it to the Home Turf: YouTube Adds AirPlay Competitor to its iOS App (GigaOM)
YouTube just released an update to its iOS app that adds the ability to send videos directly from an iPad or iPhone to Google TV devices. The AirPlay-like feature was first rolled out as part of YouTube’s Android app in November, but YouTube has long said that it wants to bring the technology to additional platforms to allow frictionless sharing of content in the living room.

Groupon to Replace CEO Andrew Mason

Photo: Aaron Fulkerson via Wikimedia Commons

Andrew Mason will no longer be the chief executive of Groupon, the company announced today.

Stock in the daily deal business had fallen more than 20 percent after the company’s fourth quarter earnings failed to meet analysts’ expectations, according to the Wall Street Journal.

In a leaked memo published by Business Insider earlier today, Mason wrote, “After four and a half intense and wonderful years as CEO of Groupon, I’ve decided that I’d like to spend more time with my family. Just kidding – I was fired today. If you’re wondering why… you haven’t been paying attention. From controversial metrics in our S1 to our material weakness to two quarters of missing our own expectations and a stock price that’s hovering around one quarter of our listing price, the events of the last year and a half speak for themselves. As CEO, I am accountable.”

In November 2012, Groupon’s board of directors had voted to keep Mason in place despite the fact that shares were down 80 percent from the company’s public debut in 2011.

“It would be weird if the board was not discussing whether I was the right guy for the job,” Mason said at the time. “If I ever thought I wasn’t the right guy for the job, I would be the first one to fire myself.”

Apparently, his colleagues beat him to it. Executive chairman Eric Lefkofsky and vice chairman Ted Leonsis will share the role until the board of directors can find a replacement.
